Re: first snake

i wouldnt say egg eater as getting food can be hard. Id say corn snake 100%. Our daughter has had snakes from the agg of 6 so as long as your child understands the differance betwen playing with an animal and hadling one shouldnt be a problem.Id probably try to go for an older snake as little ones can be very wiggly and skitish. We allways make sure the snakes our daughter has are of good nature and are handled by us for good few weeks before she gets to hold them.Good luck and im sure your son will be more than ok with a corn snake. We allways have locks on all our vivs so this way we can have full control of snakes coming out and it allso lets us know our daughter is cleaning and feeding when she should.

They are not an animal you can play with, some snakes can be held for a while but it is on their terms. Reptiles are not the same as mammals and dont react and interact in the same way. I know that lots of people think cornsnakes are really friendly but that isnt always the case, some are very aggressive and will bite. They dont like being played with it causes them stress and they can be made ill and put off theor food etc. If you want a pet to play with then a snake is not the right one, if you want a interesting, beautiful animal that you may be able to handle from time to time then maybe.
Some of the calmer species include corns, some of the boas (but they get big), western hognoses, royal pythons (often very shy and easily stressed), garter snakes, some of the kingsnake and milksnake species. All of these exept some boas are realtively small and manageable. My 7 year old has and does handle all these species regularly with supervision - but he never PLAYS with them.

I know that al sounds a bit preachy but I had to say it

Boccia Boys Dad - I keep or have kept - Common Boas, Green Tree Pythons, Emerald Tree Boas, Cornsnakes, Ratsnakes, Garter snakes, Amazon Tree Boas, Cali Kingsnake, Pueblan Milksnake, Rough Green Tree Snakes, Royal Pythons, Ackie monitors, Bearded Dragons, Haitan Curly Tails, Totoises and Turtles
I have to agree, snakes are too unpredictable!

Ummm well first off all its not a bull its a snake!!!! my dad really nows his stuff and what we are saying is not not handle the snake because my 7 year old brother is a snake inthuseastt and he handles our snakes with supporvision but you dont play with snakes a mouse or a gerbil would be a better pet to play with as snakes are cold blooded and do not warm to 1 owner. We had a corn and he was a vicious thing and he bit you if you even looked at him. Really snakes dont play and if you want a beautifull specimen to look at then a snake or a lizard is right for you. But if you want a loyal warm loving pet then you need something else. But everyone is entitled to there own opnion

Re: first snake

I think you're both right.
as lalala said they can be predictable if you know the snake.
but if you don't then they're not predoctable... make sense?
same with any animal.

reptilicious is on a distinguished road
Re: first snake

Personally and from experience i recommend a royal python for a first snake.
I have posted a detailed caresheet here: My Royal Python Caresheet

Alternatevly you may wish to go for a corn snake, Widely available and not expensive, However they can be quicker and grow longer than a royal python, on the down side, royal pythons CAN have feeding issues, but as can all snakes.
