Re: Introduction to My Snakes

Unless Southern California has suddenly done a 360 degree turnaround since I was last there - and by the way, Los Angeles is home to me - then you need to open your eyes! I know of not one single person or university using frozen food to feed their reptiles in the USA. I graduated from USC in herpetology.
I could sit here and make a scientific argument for (mostly) and against - but something far more important is at hand for the Brits - and that includes myself presently. I need every single reptile owner to not only JOIN a recognized reptile Association, but to keep up with current trends and most importantly, legislation. There are a large number of people and agencies out there, including much of the RSPCA who are trying hard to make reptile keeping in England illegal, and doing everything in their considerable power to stop all trade fairs and exhibitions. PLEASE do your bit!! If not, then we can all say goodbye to our reptiles. We MUST be heard, or this government will make the choice for us!! Please Google it now - BFH is a good one, but please get involved.

Re: Introduction to My Snakes

I guess SoCal has then, how long has it been since you’ve been here, exactly? Years ago no one could get good frozen feeders… it was quite nasty, actually. (trashbags full of 500 wet, thawed mice) Now that there are companies that package and ship frozen to your door for much cheaper than raising a colony of rats, mice or whatever it is you’re breeding, it’s a big convenience for reptile owners.

Not to mention no veterinarian in his right mind recommends live food, every exotic vet I’ve spoken with insists you feed prekilled or frozen. And as I said, you will be perceived of as quite backwards thinking for feeding live or being a proponent of it.

But I believe that this will just continue to be you pushing your opinion and me pushing mine… so if you want to drop it, (as inferred by the change in topic) then I will.

England is also the only country in the world that does not permit the feeding of live food to reptiles. How many snakes have you seen hunting for frozen food? Do snakes get attacked by live prey? of course they do - just like any other animal that has to catch it's food. Remember that you are priviledged to have a reptile in captivity, and while I do not agree with the frozen food only policy of this idiotic island, it is the law and has to be obeyed. I am in the reptile trade and would lose the license immediately if we ever broke this law regardless of my / our opinion of it. Don't slag off the Yanks either - they are light years ahead when it comes to keeping reptiles.
Well,where to start?
Firstly I,along with every other British person who use this forum I expect,am insulted by your refernce to our country as an Idiotic Island(this comes from a native of the nation who voted George Bush as their chosen leader?!)
You are either making this up as you go along or woefully uneducated.I have been involved in the reptile industry in the UK for 21 years this year, and I can assure you there is no law whatsoever against the feeding of live prey to reptiles. To claim that the keeping of reptiles is 'lightyears' ahead is just ridiculous,if this were the case there wouldnt be the current trend of seriously overfeeding the captive snakes in the USA,with the Python Molurus
and Python Reticulatus being the main species that suffer over there. The trend in america is to create as big and heavy a specimen as possible with no regard for the effects on the snake itself.
If we are being honest here, the most advanced research into the captive husbandy of reptiles takes place in mainland Europe, with Germany and Holland being the frontrunners. If you have genuinely been in the trade as long as you claim you would not only know this but you would not have the front to claim otherwise.
The feeding of frozen food is safer for your animal, however in certain situations, particularly with wild caught specimens,it can often be the case that live feeding is required.
Frankly, you come across as a typical set in their ways keeper I deal with on a regular basis, your way is right and you wont accept any other opinion,no matter how educated or experienced they are.
I'm sure you will try and insult or ridicule our ways further, but in my 21 years I have seen far healthier, longer lived snakes in the UK and europe than in the USA.Fact.
