Advice on breeding corns

Help!!
We have just discovered that one of our two so-called male corn snakes has laid 14 eggs!
Explains all the weird activity in the vivarium just lately I suppose!
But now we are not sure as to what to do...we have looked on the Net and following a few links have set up a fish tank with a heater and have a plastic tub to put the eggs in. We haven't got any vermiculite or moss though so have to leave the eggs where they are for now. I hope that isn't going to cause any problems?
As for the snake that IS male, do we just leave him in the vivarium or remove him?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as we are complete novices to this and hadn't actually planned on breeding which is why we specifically requested two males at the time of purchase! Cheers.

Re: Advice on breeding corns

You will need an absorbant substrate to place the eggs in such as vermiculite or sphagnum moss which you've mentioned, in order to maintain humidity and prevent the eggs from dehydrating. when an egg dehydrates it dimples in, at this point you will want to increase humidity. The eggs should be burried in the substrate leaving only a section of the egg exposed. Eggs can also retain too much moisture which can be just as bad. If they feel solid you will want to think about losing some humidity by exposing more of the egg and leaving the lid to your incubator open slightly. Too much moisture can also encourage the growth of fungus on the eggs though if this fungus is cleaned off daily it shouldn't effect the developing embryo inside.

Mine usually take 65-75 days to hatch, the warmer the temps are the faster the embryo in the egg will develope. I incubate mine at around 26C though temps between 25-30C (76-86F) are good incubation temperatures.

It would be wise to seperate the two snakes for a month or two allowing the female to recover in peace and also to prevent a second clutch as corn snakes breed twice in one year.

Re: Advice on breeding corns

Thanks for your response, any advice is greatly received. Eggs are now incubating in vermiculite...we actually have 17 and not 14 as originally thought; 'dad' has been removed and mum is resting! Good tip about the dimpling, I was wondering why that had happened on a couple of them so have now increased the humidity. Fingers crossed! Cheers.
