Royal not eating

Hi, I have not been on the snakes forum before as I always on the dog page, nice to see that there are a few names I recognise. My husband has a corn and a royal python both about 2 years old. The royal has stopped eating, I know it is fairly normal for snakes to go a long time without food, and our local reptile shop said that they can go for 6 months without food, but it is so odd to think of a pet not eating for that long I just wanted to check lol. Izzy our royal has not eaten for about 2 months we have had her since she was 6 months old and the longest she has gone before is 3 weeks. I wondered if it might be down to breeding seasons or something Does this sound normal or should we be concerned?

Re: Royal not eating

royals are notorious for being funny feeders. It is normal for all snakes to go off there food but royals tend to be worse than the others. They are a very timid snake. If you are really worried try putting it in a small tub that is not see through and leave alone for a week or so and just very quietly drop a food item in and again leave alone. If not eaten next day take out and leave alone for another week and try again. We have always kept royals in really usefull tubs rather than vivs they seem to be much better feeders. Lots of people make the mstake of giving them vivs that are far to big and this just makes them very insecure.Do you know if it is W/C or farmed or C/B? it does seem to make a lot of differance in there feeding habits.

Re: Royal not eating

It is the time of year for royals to go off their food.

Monitor it's weight, as long as it doesn't start dramatically losing weight, it'll be fine..

as asked before, is it Captive Bred? Which shop did you buy it from?

Re: Royal not eating

Its very very normal for royals not to eat for months as long as they keep good condition and dont lose weight to much. She should be fine

What size food is she on? You could brain very small (weaner/fluffs) which makes them smell more, You could also place on the radiator or in a bowl of warm water (in a bag) to warm it up first

Sometimes though its just a waiting game

Re: Royal not eating

Yeah we have had the same problem recently, but she has shed her skin the past week and so that probably had something to do with it, like the others have said they are fussy little devils but as long as they aren't losing weight too quick should be fine!! X

Hi funny you should post yesterday my husband was feeding our corn yesterday and thought he would see what would happen and she struck and took his rat lol. It was quite small but at least she has eaten something, it seems an age since she ate last.
