can you use two heat matS?

Can i use two heat mats in my four foot wooden viv?

I am having real trouble keeping the cool end of the tank around 21 celsius even though i have a 17" heat mat set at 29 celsius at the hot end. The cool end can go as low as 17 celsius! and never normally exceeds 20. The viv is in an open kitchen/diner so keeping the heat in the rooms is pretty difficult.

What i was thinking of doing is keeping the hot end how it is and putting a small 7w heat mat at the cool end and set it to 21 celsius using a thermostat and digital thermometer? will this be okay?

Also, do i need to make sure the substrate level temp is 29-21 or the air temp? and does the temp need to be lowered at night?

I am eventually going to move onto ceramic but can not afford it at the moment.

as above, what is it your keeping, id probably suggest using a small low wattage lifght bulb in the hot end to try and raise the ambient temp, depending on the species and sixe of tank you shouldnt need a stat for it, just make sure its low wattage and its guarded.

and of corse turn it off at night

Depending on the species the temp difference may be ok.Does your snake spend all time in the hot end or does it roam?
