should i be getting more concerned about monty??
ok all its now been about 3 months since hes eaten at all as i got him in late october early november ive tried many different methods and i cant get the chick from my local petshop so ive tried my rat methods. would maybe dangling it with tongs make any difference ??. he is not gettin skinny and is a happy boy
also i hovered the whole of my flat, washed bedding and did flea my cats (i think the treatment i bought wasnt very good as i got it from a petshop so im guna get sum more from my vets on monday) and im still finding fleas in my snakes water bowl my bf sed that my one cat does sneek up on the top of montys tank when im at work and that spot is right under his water bowl and im still finding fleas in his bowl. now ive read up about mites and the description of sites on how to tell if its mites is the snake soaking alot more in water which monty is not doing none of his behavour has changed and also they would look like little black specks in his water like ground pepper kinda thing well these are defo fleas they are bigger and they look like a flea now when i went to my petshop about some spray they werent very helpfull they didnt do hardly anything for snakes just the food so on monday also i have found a reptile shop so i will be going in there. will spraying the tank for mites do anything or is it a waste of time though it doesnt hurt to spray it just in case. Also i want to change the bedding at the time i spray the bedding ive got in it is like wood chippings will my snake be upset if i get something that doesnt look the same? i no keep a close eye on my cat if she dares go on the top of his tank she gets scooted off. because i havent been able to get the spray for his tank i have been wiping it down with warm water and a cloth with nothing chemical ect on it. please someone tell me its my cats i got monty out the other day and he looked fine. from now on any treatments for my cats in gettin from the vet because my petshop were not helpfull to me at all. also can you all give me some tips on how to spot mites ect cause im worried if a flea can get on my cat and in his tank what else could get on my cat and in his tank. they are house cats so they wont b bringing anything in from outside but with people coming in in not taking any chances. i feel like such a bad owner right now but i want to get this sorted once and for all. and as for my petshop i dont think ill bve going there again its the vets for the cats and the reptile shop for my snake |

Re: should i be getting more concerned about monty??
What is Monty? a royal python?
If so what is he in? a viv? RUB? how often is he handled? How big is he and what are you trying to feed him and how often? What are the temps like in viv/rub? If you havn't already tried it i would consider putting him in a RUB. Not handling. making sure the food is right size. Lots more to try but im not sure what you have already tried |

Re: should i be getting more concerned about monty??
Just gone over your previous posts..
I personally would try this Put him in a RUB, black it out (cover with newspaper or such so he cant see out). With 1 hide and water bowl.leave him for 24 hours. then offer his food quietly at the door of hide, if he dosnt take it after a couple of minutes, drop it and leave it overnight. (do not keep checking, leave well alone) Royals are real sods for not eating. this has worked for a couple of mine |

Re: should i be getting more concerned about monty??
yeh hes a royal python hes in a viv that is glass doors and wood arr round the sides
he is a fully grown male and he is fed on medium size weeners thats what his previous owner fed him on and he enver had any problems plus i get them from the same place he did. i currently hardly handle him at all ive handled him once in the last few months ive tried to leave him alone other than changin his water hoping that wud help he gets fed once a week he has a red heat lamp and one heat mat that is on the humidity temp that is in the middle reads 45 and i have a thermomiter on the cool side that reads 65 the previous owner set the tank up for me as he was in a massive glass tank so he has done the temps ect and he told me 2 leave it. I am going to have to get him out this week as ive have discovered my cats have fleas the stuff i bought didnt work and ive found a few in his water bowl cause my one cats been sneekily sleeping above his water bowl area on his tank so im thinking to spray his tank out to make sure that nothing else has got in. hes still his normal self and all hes not skinny and he basks late at night as always and everything none of his normal behavour has changed he does sniff the rat when i put it in and his tongue starts going and he does go near it but no matter what its still there when i get up. i have started leaving him a couple of weeks then tryin and if no luck leaving him a couple of weeks again as i dont want to not try and feed him but i dont want to stress him out with it? |

Re: should i be getting more concerned about monty??
yeah it was i did have the windows open full wack tho is that bad?
this is going to sound so dumb but i dont no how 2 change the temps in the tank as i cnt seem 2 get hold of the previous owner anymore even though they live local and said any help i need they wud help me. the viv is 4 ft by 18 inches. i have had my heatin on as its been reli cold. i dont have any other temperature telling thing other than my thermomiter on the cool end and my humididy thingy in the middle of the tank. god i bet i sound so dumb hes my 1st snake and the previous owner promised 2 help me with him but hes left me on my own and im failing my poor snakey |

Re: should i be getting more concerned about monty??
Hey, don't worry, everyone starts somewhere. Where abouts do you live?
Ok how long is Monty? a 3ft viv is usually best for royals, unless he is a big boy. Don't do anymore spraying in that room without fully covering the vents and any holes, gaps in the viv. Ideally move him out of the room, but only if he has somewhere permanent to go, otherwise moving him too often will upset him. Do you have any local reptile shops? Get down there ASAP and buy a thermostat for your bulb, a bulb guard and a digital thermometer. Thermostat will help you to be able regulate the temperature properly. I don't like using heat mats with royals in vivs, they are quite chunky snakes and can get burns from laying directly on them, so i would whip that one out. You will most likely need to get a higher wattage heat bulb. Humidity is an easy one, mist the tank lightly, and see what it does to the humidity level. It is a little trial and error, but you will soon work out what is needed. What colour is your heat bulb? Have a read of this, it has the basics until you can get down to a reptile shop who will help talk you through things. Re: should i be getting more concerned about monty??
um im nt exactly sure how long monty is but hes the length of my bath if that helps
my heat bulb is red it does have a gaurd thingy on it and i dont no if this is anything but on the light cable there is a round thing it looks like a button but it turns round ?? the previous owner put the mat on the back side of the tank when he did it for me is that makes any diff? i will take a load of pics 2morw of the tank and also monty to show you if i put a towl over his tank will that help when i spray ? |

Re: should i be getting more concerned about monty??
If you could take a pic of the button thing too that would be useful.
Yeah mat on the back is better, is it to one end of the tank? same end as bulb? It would help, but i would be extra cautious and double layer it at least and tuck it under if possible. Is he a definite male? Has he been probed? xx

Re: should i be getting more concerned about monty??
I also wanna add in have you been taking his weight at all? its a good idea to take weights and then you know if his weight aint going down then you don't have to get too stressed about it.
Typical royal eh ? lol My female hasnt eaten for about 3 months too, I'll be poping her in a rub tomorrow, covering her up and trying her feed again on friday, if she don't eat on friday then ill leave her another 10 days and maybe try her with a mouse, even tho I don't really want her startin on mice because it'll take me forever to get her back on rats! I've heard of royals goin 6 months without food and only losing a small amout of weight before they start eating again. I guess I just wanna re-assure you so you don't get to panicy sorry if I've repeated anything anyone has said, I kinda skimmed thro the posts, the rub ideas a good one tho, I've got my male in a 70L (hes called Monty too haha) and he's a fantastic feeder. I'm kinda hoping my female will appreciate it as much as he has. What ever you decide just go in to replace the water, check the temps, cover up the tank/rub... kinda leave him be. You can try with a smaller prey size, sometimes helps, like I said I'll be trying jumbo mice if push comes to shove in 10 days. Apparently they love gerbils, so you can see if you can get some dirty gerbil bedding (local pet shop? or a friend?) and scent the rat (apparently it helps) Can;t really add anymore to that without really repeating what others have said ![]() |
