Two headed snake

I've seen articles on several two headed snakes since I was a child & wonder if any snake expert could tell me why it happens- is it inbreeding, background radiation or something else? Also, do they suffer becuase of this deformity? I feel sorry for them as they must be seen as a 'novely' by some people

Re: Two headed snake

Conjoining of twins is seen in all animals including humans as i'm sure you know, it's not intentionally bred or the result of any mutigens. It occurs when the fertilised egg begins to split but doesn't quit completely. The specific condition is called polycephaly and is most commonly observed in snakes and turtles.

Re: Two headed snake

Thanks for that
Can they live a normal life, I'm guessing they can as there are cojoined human twins who have done

Kelfezond is on a distinguished road
Re: Two headed snake

Just to clear up any confusion on your initial post you wondered if it was inbreeding, snakes are not effected by inbreeding like mammals are and i'm sure that it's perfectly safe for snakes to inbreed upto the 6th generation of babies without negative results, alot of snake breeders do this.

is true , not sure whether you know but all taiwans in the world so i`ve read came from two legally imported wild caught pairs
Taiwan Beauty Snake Care Guide

Quote:
First bred by Dr Rainer Fesser who was lucky enough to legally acquired a pair of wild caught Taiwan Beauty Snakes. This species is protected by Taiwan law and the exportation of them is forbidden, recently the keeping of this species in Taiwan has also been made illegal.

In 1970 Dr Fesser was successful with the first captive breeding of this species. A few years later he managed to acquire another pair, which he also successfully bred. Dr Fesser has literally bred thousands of Taiwan Beauties over the years and to the best of his knowledge, these are the source of ALL Taiwans in captivity. So it would appear that there are only two bloodlines of this species in captivity.
