Re: baird rat snake
This is a problem which could take a long time to overcome. The only answer is to handle it, handle it and handle it until it becomes accustomed to being handled and eventually it realises your not going to harm it. Be careful not to pick it up for a few days after it has fed because it may throw up. Personally I'm not really bothered about the bite from a Bairds Rat snake, it's pretty minor. Although if you use the flat palm of your hand and place it over their head when picking them up, they tend not to bite. Also removing them and feeding them separately in a plastic tum instead of the vivarium reduces confusion between being pick up or fed as you never feed them in the vivarium. But if your worried about being bitten put on a smooth leather glove, not suede. Some reptile experts say don't wear gloves because their teeth get caught and break off. But snakes teeth break off anyway whilst capturing their prey anyway. At the very least it's discourages them from biting eventually.
