Advice - Corn Snake

I got a baby corn snake three days ago. It's a month old (i think) and it has a 16 x 8.5 inch tank which is 10inches tall.

It has been with me for three days now but when I go to handle it or even touch it, it curls up or runs/wriggles away. Is it too early for me to start handling it? Oh, last time it ate is also 3 days ago.

Re: Advice - Corn Snake

This is normal behaviour for a hatchling. Give it a week to settle first, everythings very new for it so leaving it to settle will help it calm.

When you feed it, take it out of it's enclosure, this will help with the taming process.

The easiest way to pick up a frightened corn is move your have very slowly to it's mid body. If it's head faces your hand, stop moving, it won't bite then. If it slithers grab it round the mid section of it's body and take it out, then let the snake slither from one hand to the other, restraining the snake will make it stressed. It will be quick at first but once it realises your not going to hurt it, it will soon slow down. It's easiest to sit down with a snake whilst taming it. Only short sessions to begin with, several minutes at first, every other day then when it gets used to this you can handle it for longer periods of time more often.

Make sure it has plenty of hides in which to feel secure and handle during the evening rather then during the day as they are naturally nocternal.

Good luck taming your corn

Thats to be expected, it will eventually calm. I'm taming 19 of my own hatchlings at the moment, one was a biter but now just rattles its tail, the others are now fairly tame! Just calm gentle handling and some patients, your snake will tame in no time.
