Cage Donation

Hi everyone,

I have decided that I would like to organise my own rescue "centre" for rodents in the Swansea area. So far I've dedicated one bedroom to the cause and I'm hoping to adopt three little mice from Mickel Marsh on the 15th to keep as pets but I would love to be able to take in little furries from people who can no longer look after them. However, this is going to be a home run thing and it can get very expensive so I just wanted to ask if anyone decides they no longer need their cages and cant be bothered with selling them I have plenty of space to take them off your hands.

I know it sounds a bit cheeky but I have to start somewhere and not having to spend lots of money cages means we have more money for the more important things like vet bills etc.

Thank you for reading!

Hi, I would chat to others who have their own rescues on here- spoiled rat, cluedo, shadowrat & ceretrea are the ones I can remember, as it is something that can't be undertaken lightly, you have to have a pragmatic head to deal with some of the things you may witness & also be aware that costs can mount up very quickly- for example you may have to consider vet costs for multiple animals that come in, and budget for feeding & management etc*. You need to decide whether you will be a sanctuary or a rescue that rehomes & what your rehoming criteria would be, how you will deal with the inevitable messed up animals that have been through hell before coming to you, & to read up about the different species you may end up having to care for, I'm not sure if you have to register with the charities comission also. It's a 24/7 job, 365 days a year with no company perks or Christmas bonuses! Quarantine space is also very important
*as just one example of what you can possibly expect (I'm sure others will tell you of their experiences), last October I took in 3 female feeder breeder rats from disgusting conditions, all of them were pregnant, none of them had ever known anything but cruelty & neglect & when they arrived they were unhandleable, as it was unexpected I borrowed cages & equipment from kind donors, paid for them to have vet treatment & ectoparasite treatment, they had to be quarantined & on pregnancy watch for the first 3 weeks they were with me, which meant buying lots of extra food, as we ended up with 25 babies, which grew fast, ate loads & needed separating at 5 weeks to ensure the boys didn't get their mums pregnant
