My Rabbits

Here are a few pics of my rabbits. I now have 5 rabbits, 2 lionheads Honey and Treacle, 1 Lionhead x Thumper and 2 French Lops Oreo and her son Nova.

Thumper now lives in an indoor cage due to having glaucoma, he gets to run round the house all day when I'm around. They all love to run round and run riot in the garden when let out for an hour each day when I'm around to watch them. They have seperate runs they can use all day long.

Honey (Right) & Treacle (Left) are both Lionhead Does, litter sisters, 2 years

Thumper is a Lionhead x (i think) 7 years

Oreo is a Chocolate French Lop Doe, 1 year

Oreo 9 weeks

Oreo 1 year

Nova is a 4 month old Orange French Lop Buck (correct me if I'm wrong on the colour), he is Oreo's Son

Nova 6 weeks

Nova 4 months

Re: My Rabbits

nova looks more like a chestnut agouti then an orange, he is much to heavily ticked, and you can see the undercoat showing through, im also pretty sure you cant normally get orange (at- B- C- D- ee) from a black (aa B- C- D- E-) what colour was his dad?
i take it she is now spayed so no more babies

lovely bunnies

Re: My Rabbits

Oreo was black when I bought her but over the last few months she turned to a mix of chocolate colours. Not had her spayed yet, will be getting done once I've got the money.

Not quite sure on the colour of the Buck she mated with. Still trying to find information on genetics and colourings.

here's a couple of pics of the Buck. He was a silvery colour when I first saw him then slightly changed to a light shade of brown (fawn I think)

Re: My Rabbits

he looks like an opal (A- B- C- dd E-) which is an agouti based colour, no way could they throw an orange kit, in all likelyhood, without taking into account any resseives (which i could do if you gave more info on both their parents) you would get an entire litter of agoutis

did she have any more in the litter? did you breed her yourself? or did you get her already mated? if you bred her yourself can i ask your reasons? breeding isnt as simple as putting 2 bunnies together theres so much more to take into account

Re: My Rabbits

I didn't know she had been mated up as I took her to where I got her from for a week while I was on holiday and I ended up with a litter of 9 3 weeks after I brought her home. I was told she had been in with another rabbit but I was assured at the time the other rabbit was a Doe and not a Buck.

The litter consisted of 5 which were black and 4 which I was told were orange. The blacks were all turning different colours from 9 weeks, 1 was going silver tipped which I've read is part of the steel gene, 3 are black with a chocolate band around them and 1 is half black and half chocolate. The 4 that was supposedly orange did the same and started to get the ticking on their backs.

I wasn't intending on breeding her as I didn't know any background of her parents. I only saw the mother to my Doe which was chinchilla in colour.

Re: My Rabbits

sounds like they both carry other colours then, i would guess one or both are fox carriers, and this is the ticking you are seeing coming through in the blacks, and that the buck is a black carrier.
where is the chocolate band? this could also be down to the fox gene.
have you got any pictures of them

i would say the orange are all actually chestnut agoutis

Re: My Rabbits

The band on the blacks is near to where their feet are.

Black/Silver tipped

Half Black/Half Chocolate (best pic i could find)

Black with Chocolate Band (the one in pic is just turning from the chocolate band, others are similar to this but chocolate)

Re: My Rabbits

they are just blacks hun, although they dont meet the correct colour standards.
the "silver" on the first is undesirable, and comes from mating the chocolate to the opal, you have the ticking from the A (agouti gene) trying to show through. it could also come from the V gene (viena marked or dilute) meaning that s/he is a carrier of the dilute gene, which s/he has inherited from mum or dad

the "chocolate" looks nothing more then sun bleaching, or coat it could be the coat fading, its not an actual marking, but it would make the rabbits un showable

so i would say dad is an opal carrying black, which makes sense for this litter
genetics are fascinating

Re: My Rabbits

thank you

I know who to come to for the genetic and colour side of things.

I am hoping to get into showing rabbits but have no idea on how to go about it lol I have been reading everything I can on the BRC and contacted a few breeders who show but I'm getting nowhere
