I find normal nail clippers much easier for small claws than any of the specially made ones.
For ages I found it impossible to keep him still enough to trim his claws so I kept putting different rough surfaces in his cage to try and let him wear them down naturally. Works great on his front claws but not on his back ones.
I then had a brain wave and stuck him head first into a vertical toilet roll tube on a table, so he had his head/front feet on the table and bum/legs hanging out of the top of the tube. I then just gently held his foot still to snip the claws, was much easier than I could ever have imagined! Wouldn't work for doing front claws though, if his front ones ever need doing it'll have to be a vets job.
Have you tried putting bricks and things in their cages? Mice, being more active than a hamster, will probably manage to wear their claws down much better
