Ralphie - Hamster :)

Had Ralphie out tonight as he desperately needed his claws cut so I grabbed a few pics

NOM, good cheerio!

Nibbling the nail clippers after the nails clippers nibbled him lol

A couple of months ago I thought he was on his last legs, so I'm happy he's still plodding on. He was given to me as a "vicious" hamster who would lunge hiss and bite at every opportunity, but he's never shown any aggression to me at all, love him!
Petitepuppet and manic rose like this.

love that photo with his tongue out

How do you find doing it with normal nail clippers? I try and do my mice with those tiny claw clippers but it's next to impossible!

Re: Ralphie - Hamster :)

I find normal nail clippers much easier for small claws than any of the specially made ones.
For ages I found it impossible to keep him still enough to trim his claws so I kept putting different rough surfaces in his cage to try and let him wear them down naturally. Works great on his front claws but not on his back ones.
I then had a brain wave and stuck him head first into a vertical toilet roll tube on a table, so he had his head/front feet on the table and bum/legs hanging out of the top of the tube. I then just gently held his foot still to snip the claws, was much easier than I could ever have imagined! Wouldn't work for doing front claws though, if his front ones ever need doing it'll have to be a vets job.
Have you tried putting bricks and things in their cages? Mice, being more active than a hamster, will probably manage to wear their claws down much better

Yeah, they've got all sorts in their cage. It's weird because one of them has absolutely perfect claws, and the other two have good claws except one, which has gotten really long.

Thanks for the tips!
