New ratties

We've had joy, disappointment, gladness and grief this week. But ultimately we managed to find friends for our single lad Binky. Three brothers all the way from Furry Friends in Surrey.

Here's Nijel, or Attila the Hun as we've affectionately dubbed him. We've got some work to do with this lad but he's going to turn out lovely:

Rincewind is next, the recipient of an unfortunate injury during intros (he got in the way), he is fine now. The side effect of that injury is that he is now much more happy to be handled, having had handling somewhat forced upon him.

Oats was the rat we were going to adopt as a singleton but ended up giving in to the urge to get all three. He's the most laid back of the trio so far. This is him with Rincewind

And Binky of course, who isn't at all sure what to do with these lads at all. But we're getting there. This may turn out to be the hardest intros we've had so far but we'll see, I enjoy a challenge.

Huge thank you to Furry Friends for letting us have them all, and hopefully all will be together soon.

Re: New ratties

We've decided to pair Binks up with Oats s he is the most submissive of the trio. Thats gone quite well so far. Nijel and Rincewind will not be ready for the big boys for a little while yet. I think the main issue there is to do with their lack of confidence with people actually. With handling they should calm down enough to cope better with ratty intros, but right now they are both just too jumpy and defensive. If time suggests a hormonal link to the aggression (I'm looking at you Nijel!) Then loss of man parts may be called for but that a little way down the road yet.

Re: New ratties

Around 4 months, Binky is a little younger I think. The situation they came from though has contributed to the nerves. We;ve had nervous rats before, we'll see how they go. We knew they weren't confident so it may well turn out to be that. Young rats can be jumpy or pingy but this isn't that, we've had a lot of kitten here, its more highly strung skittishness. Oats is a lot calmer but we knew he ws also the most confident. So given time and handling they should get better.

When I got Itsy and Bitsy they were only tiny, about 3-4 weeks old and they were littermates, they came from terrible circumstances yet Itsy is a proper cuddle monster and Bitsy is still pretty scared of anyone but me .
