URGENT! - Chinchilla cages/equipment needed!
If anyone has any chinchilla cages going spare would be greatly appreciated. The rescue i support and another in the area have just taken on a big chinchilla rescue between them.
41 chins in total and all arrived in groups of approximately 3 in hamster cages! Larger groups arrived in small indoor guinea pig cages. Mixed males and females in each cage (excluding cages with mums and babies). Some have been moved into chinchilla/large rat/large bird cages but not enough spare cages to go around. Any left over have been moved into large indoor guinea pig/rabbit cages as a temporary measure but obviously need more space. If anyone has any chinchilla toys and things they could also be put to good use. If anyone can help in anyway it would be fantastic!!! Thanks a bunch!!

Do you have an email address for people to contact? And is this Bristol based? I'd like to share this on twitter and things.

Yes it is bristol based.
E-mail address - yateanimalfoster@googlemail.com Website for Yate Small Animal - Home - Yate Small Animal Foster & Rehome Tracey has contacts with the other rescue so should be able to correspond to send what's needed where (if that made sense). The other rescue is based in Shortwood - near bristol but i'm not sure of the rescue name/website/contact

Re: URGENT! - Chinchilla cages/equipment needed!
how on earth are they keeping them in hamster/rabbit/piggy cages..... they have plastic bases, when they chew them it can kill them =/
as tempting as it is to take in every animal that needs it rescues need to know their own limits and NOT take in more then they can actually deal with

Re: URGENT! - Chinchilla cages/equipment needed!
To be fair that comment does not really help.
Both of these rescues have been running for a long time and know their limits. They can handle the numbers and understand the needs of chinchillas. They knew the number that was to arrive after originally being told 35. What they weren't told was the size of the cages arriving. As i said as many as possible have been moved into decent size chinchilla cages. The others have been moved into LARGER guinea pig cages which is a TEMPORARY measure. We all know that this is not entirely suitable but it is still an IMPROVEMENT to what they were in. The other half is already planning his trip to B&Q to create better housing situations but if people are willing to donate cages then surely that is a much nicer option. That is why we're asking for help. Another kind person has already offered to house 10 possibly pregnant females in a very large purpose built chinchilla house for the full gestation period. So that already means that most of these chinchillas are in decent houses with decent kind-hearted people who understand chinchilla care. If you know of anybody that has decent chinchilla cages or is willing to help by donating, fostering or know of any other rescues that may have space then all suggestions are welcome. The person they came from admitted to breeding them and as far as they were concerned all were healthy and kept in decent condition and suitable welfare standards. Imagine how much worse this could have been a few months down the line. I understand that it is not possible to take in every animal but sometimes it is an emergency situation and people should do what they can to help. Negative comments aside. Thank you.

Re: URGENT! - Chinchilla cages/equipment needed!
if they are pregnant they do not want housing in a LARGE cage with other chinchillas, they need housing in low long cages preferably on their own, kept in a large cage with others there is great risk of harm to any babies that are born!!
and sorry but the rescue obs doesnt know their own limits, i rescue myself and would never take in more animals then i had space to house, and i would nevr relay on any one bringing an animal to me to provide it with adaquate accomidation, even temporary housing should be fit for the purpose, and they can actually kill them selves in a plastic bottomed cage, all it takes is one little nibble and they can cause gut impactions in an emergency situation rescues should liaise with each other and find spaces in other rescues and with foster homes, or sadly, just say no, we cant save them all, and putting them all at risk, rather then taking X amount and offering them a safe environment is not the answer you will be VERY lucky to find any free chinchilla cages, they are big and expensive and not something people tend to have laying around like cheep hamster cages, if people do have them empty they tend to want to sell them to recoup some of their money

Re: URGENT! - Chinchilla cages/equipment needed!
Then by all means offer to help...
Even if you do not approve of their methods then you should at least understand the reasoning behind it, as an animal rescue you should have their best interests at heart. I'm sure you do a fantastic job, and these 2 rescues do as well. Sometimes it's just not possible to be perfect everytime. That's why we are asking for help. If you are not prepared to help then please save your judgement. If you are prepared to help then I am sure that both will be more than willing to accept your guidance and input.

Re: URGENT! - Chinchilla cages/equipment needed!
i rescue the ones that need help and they stay here till their time comes to cross the bridge, i do not operate as an official rescue
i am not any where close enough to offer any help, the rescue really should have thought about that before accepting the animals in, surely you must see they have bitten off way more then they can chew, it would have been much better if they said we have X cages we can take X animals NOT we have X cages but we WILL take Y animals, once the rescue had taken X animals (preferably the most in need) they should then start asking around for more cages to house any of the remaining animals that are WAITING to come into rescue, and ringing round other rescues to find spaces for these animals, not put the animals in unsuitable cages, as im sorry, but thats no better then the situation they have taken them from and while they may have the animals best interests at heart, they are not putting their welfare first with the actions they have taken and yes, i hope you do pass this onto the rescue, as im sorry but it is not very responsiable on their part if you want any advice on how to care for them then i am more then happy to help but you need to get them out the plastic bottomed cages NOW not tomorrow or later but NOW as when (not if but when) they chew them, it can kill them
