The goal of Understanding Your Rabbit's Habits is to help owners identify and understand pet rabbit behaviours and use that knowledge to improve their own rabbit's welfare.

The book begins by introducing rabbit body language - the subtle postures and ear movements that allow you to tell your rabbit is thinking and feeling. Being able to understand communication from your pet will help you react appropriately towards them, such responding to a request for grooming or backing off if your bunny feels threatened.

The book also looks at individual behaviours in-depth, including: resting, grooming, play, exploration, vigilance, fear, feeding, digging, marking, social interactions, reproduction, aggression and boredom. In many cases the motivations behind these behaviours are linked with the lives of rabbit’s wild ancestors. To help owners understand the impact of this on their pets, the behaviours are put into context to show how the physiology and environment of wild rabbits influences our pets behaviour and needs. I hope that by helping rabbit owners to understand the reasoning behind their rabbits needs, it will reinforce concepts such as the importance of good diet, exercise and companionship on their rabbit’s welfare.

The book is not just about understanding rabbits; it is also about making their lives better. An environment that accommodates your rabbit's behavioural needs is essential to their welfare. Rabbits that don't have the opportunity to express their natural behaviour patterns can end up bored and frustrated, and are more likely to be destructive and aggressive. Many ‘problem behaviours’ like marking, chewing and digging, are normal behaviours that don’t fit into the domestic environment provided. In addition to explaining behaviour, the book also provides practical information on how to use enrichment to provide appropriate outlets for normal behaviour, and how owners can adjust their care and interactions to make their rabbit happier and healthier.
