Re: Dormouse

I would like to remind you that the UK native dormouse (Muscardinus avellenarius) is a protected species and cannot me kept legally in the UK as a pet without a license and a good reason for keeping it captive (e.g. research).

The 'edible' dormouse (Glis glis) however is an apparently common exotic pet and can be legally kept as a pet in the UK. However, they are not known for being tame and are often then abandoned due to their unfriendly nature.

Please make sure your friend ensures that she does not attempt to acquire a native dormouse and to think carefully about whether she really wants a dormouse after reading about them as pets on websites.

Re: Dormouse

J-Bean - good post. It is the african pygmy Dormouse (APD) that I think is the common dormouse in the pet trade available though, the 'edible' dormouse (Glis glis) seems to be very hard to get hold of. In either case however they require a great deal of work, money and are not tame pets.
