Rats: Would you breed for health & temperament or for show?

Hiya

Would you just breed rats to improve health and temperament, or would you show your rats and breed them for show? Or would you show your rats, breed them to show and also breed for health and temperament? Is it acceptable to not show your rats at all, and only breed for health and temperament?

id say it is acceptable, not everyone likes showing but it dosent mean their animal wouldnt be good enough, I think health and temprement should come way before looks for shows

Re: Rats: Would you breed for health & temperament or for show?

I think all of the above described scenarios you give, would be acceptable, depending on what different people want to achieve.

I think if you have the right priorities and and are willing to work at something, and use selective and very careful breeding, you can improve health, longevity, type/looks, and temperament all in one.

But that is very difficult to `juggle` so to speak and often you do have to compromise as the `perfect` rats dont exist.....all have flaws or weak points in one way or another, and thats why alot of though goes into pairings in the short term, and the long term goal overall.

What are you hoping to breed?

Topeared or Dumbo? There is quite a few of both around in recent years, so you should find some very good starting rats easily

I'm going to start with top ear first, and then maybe introduce dumbo later.
