Can anyone tell me what happened?

As many of you are aware I lost my darlilng Tiny just over a week ago by having her pts cos of a tumour.

Well she had one cage buddy who I introduced with a lone female I also had, called Pom (cos she looked like a tiny pom-pom when I first got her!). There were a few scraps and Pom did have some tiny scabs on her rump...but the fighting wasn't serious so I left them together.

However 2 days ago I checked on the and Pom was sitting on her own by the food bowl and her breathing was a little off...sort of heavy but short breaths. Also...am not this is connected...but at the bottom of her back she had always had a darker spot...she was a siamese...but this now became noticeably darker and larger...I think!! Then at one point she just lay there...slightly spread...gazing into the glass wall. On the advice of YR I fed her some high protein food and kept her warm...but left her in with the other mouse.

Last night I went up and picked her out and she was in the same state...breathing hard but short breaths...now opening her mouth with each breath! Also I noticed she had a slight discharge around her eye...slightly bloody I think...thought this may have been a scratch. Oh and she had obviously lost weight...I could feel her spine very prominently and ribs! I took 2 pics and even a short video to ask YR what was happening...all the while she just lay on my hand. But id not got as far as choosing a contact before she went stiff and jerked completely out of my hand...not running...just really jerky. Then she kept jerking as if having a fit or something...her eyes bulged and she urinated...then she just went limp...all in a matter of secs. I tried kiss of life etc...but in reality I had no idea.

I have to say it was the most horrendous thing I have had to watch. I felt totally helpless. Poor poor Pom!!

But can anyone help me as to what caused this? I had moved her recently obviously...but I had disinfected the tank with what I used for her tank before, used carefresh which I used for her and she didn't move rooms. The other mouse is fine...fingers crossed. Could this have been something more deep-rooted...longer term that had just come out now? Or moving in with another mouse?

Sorry for the hugely long post...but am so heartbroken and confused. Would appreciate any help or advice.

Thanks in advice. xx

Re: Can anyone tell me what happened?

it is possible she died from loss, if she wasn't eating due to being sad her immune system, organs etc would have been compromised causing her to shut down.

it could be a number of things. lodged food, or damaged oesophagus/intestine from lodged food that has then cleared.
it could be an infection unrelated to anything, she may have had resp made worse by the loss of the other rat.. anything.
unfortunately it's one of thosethings that's hard to fathom.

I hope your other mouse (if i read this right) is fine.. will you be getting it a new playmate? If you're worried about infection wait a few weeks to see if other mouse comes down with anything. you can always take it to vets to have a check up.

poor old pom and tiny.

Re: Can anyone tell me what happened?

Just been texting Niki and found out that her mosue food contains peanuts so this could be the problem as i know some people have been having issues with it and once stopped feeding then the mouse goes back to normal.

Re: Can anyone tell me what happened?

It does sound like it could be the peanuts Niki as YR suggests. My mice took quite badly to them but not as seriously as this - it sounds similar to an anaphalactic (sp.) shock. The only time I experienced anything that sounds like what you went through was when I had to give one of my first girls some drops which had to be ingested (I can't even remember what it was for now) and it caused a reaction like this where she took a severe fit and took ages to get back to normal. I refused to use it again. Try getting rid of the peanuts as YR suggested and let us know how you get on

Re: Can anyone tell me what happened?

Am going to try that...but they have had the same diet all along...and have never had a reaction. But obv am prepared to take any advice. I have another mouse...one of my babies...who is dead skinny...and with some little sores around the base of her tail...but I separated her last night...and for about an hour...plus...and then again this moring...she was just eating!!! Poor thing I think may have been starved away from the food bowls! Hopefully she will improve. Thanks, xx

is the small mouse eating ??? as i had one which was runt and i had to take her away from others, she made a good recovery but she s tiny, but a bundle of fun . ive had a few problems with tumours an peanuts, also it could of been a severe chest infection, i would use a good cleaner , also to stop fighting introduce mice in a nuteral place , im sorry for your loss ,well ive lost nr 4 this yr in a short space of time, but the peanut thing i had a problem with as well , just keep the little mouse on her own for a bit to strengthen up good luck, well time to do my rounds pom my mice

Yes she is now eating constantly!!! Well...ok but more more than any other mouse ive seen! She already looks better...though now has lice...its just unnending!

Am taking peanuts out and making sure there is a lot of high protein food around...though thats a thought...

do people use the mouse pellet things...is it supreme science? I was using it when I fgirst got mice but it seemed boring...though with other things it should be ok...what do people think?

Also they are all litter mates...so there was no introductions.

I did have a runt that died very quickly really...I went up one day to separate her and build her up as you say...and it was too late. Had only noticed how small she was as the others had started growing and she hadnt! I didnt want to separate her from friends but now I think I should have done. Was horrible.

I just hope things are on the up now....what with maticulous attention to their diet etc and the smallest one separated then hopefully.

Thanks for everyones support though. Esp to YR...who has had to endure a lot of worried texting recently.

Thanks xx

Re: Can anyone tell me what happened?

I've never tried the srupreme science stuff. YR and I make our own mixes that way we can check what is being eaten by the mice. I was just thinking that you could try giving your mouse some porridge oats mixed with a little warm water. I've given that to my mice when they have been poorly and they love it and as it is high in protein it helps them build up their strength again. If your little mouse is looking better I'd put her back in with her cage mates - being separated can stress them out and you'll probably find that they'll help look after until she is all better
