Ive never been so discusted!

Hey all , I was excited today when I got a message back about adopting 8 gerbils. When I got to the big farm house everything seemed normal three of the gerbils was in a massive, I meen MASSIVE cage however four of them was in a really small reptile tank. But the small tank stunk!! On the way home I was counting them and could only count 7 in total, I thought the woman mistyped the advert and put a 8 instead of a 7. When I did get home I was putting the four gerbils in a bigger cage and saw a small a pile of black fur underneath the woodchippings and straight away I knew what it was. I couldn't believe it . The poor gerbil was only about 4 weeks old but must of been there buried for a couple of weeks. I'm just glad I got them when I did. To be honest it made me upset. I knew having 8 gerbils will be a bit much for me to handle but I couldn't resist it, as I've already got 3 rodents myself but I'm going to look after them for a couple of weeks then either put them up for adoption or just ask for a small price to insure they go to a good home.

Poor gerbils!! It's a good thing that you got to them when you did, at least now the rest of them will have a proper home

Well we've moved them into new cages, and they look happier, we have a breeding pair, we know the mother, but dont know which the dad is... Anyone got any advice on sexing or finding the breeding partner?

when sexing rodents the main thing to look for is males that the males penis and anus will be further apart than the females.

Re: Ive never been so discusted!

Thanks, I'll give it a go now and see what I've got. I'm also taking them to the pet shop tommorow so I can have someone sex them for me. Then I can seperate them properly.

Re: Ive never been so discusted!

What I can see Ive got:
2 Adult Males
2 Adult Females
1 Baby Female
2 Baby Males

But in the large cage I got given it had the two adult males and 1 adult female, so is there a chance she is pregnant? And which ones shall I put in which cage as I've only got 2 cages for them..
But the other female gerbil is with its three babies which I'm guessing are around 4/5 weeks old. Any help anyone..

I also have my two orginal gerbils, which are in their own cage. 1 is a adult female and the other a adult male.

yes there is every chance she is pregnant! sorry cant help with the rest! Its been a long long time since i had gerbils!

I am not sure what age you need to split the baby males off... someone will be along to help!

Otherwise its gonna mean that the baby girls and the mum will be preggers again... from the baby males!

Re: Ive never been so discusted!

I use to breed gerbils about 4 years ago but I sold my breeding pair and moved onto hamsters. I brought 2 gerbils about 3 months ago from two different pet shops to make sure they wernt related, as I want to start breeding them again. But when I saw these gerbils up for adoption I couldn't say no. But I really don't know what to do with them.. Also if the girls are pregnant the babies may be born with disabilites.. Lets just hope someone comes along, I'm going to see what the pet shop tells me what to do.. But also I think gerbils don't show signs of pregnancy until about a week or so before the birth..
