Pet shops breeding their own stock

Now, I have heard of this happening, and I also know one small pet shop that does it
Just specialising in one variety of small animal, bred at home, well reared by what I have seen.
Personally I think this is a lovely idea
But what does everyone else think on the subject?

I like this sort of idea - If they're concientious enough to be breeding their own stock then they are probably doing it in a responsible manner (I would hope anyway). It cuts out the demand for animals from rodents farms as well which is always a bonus

Though I doubt many pet shops would specialise in just one animal.

Peace

Re: Pet shops breeding their own stock

i actually breed our hamsters for the pet shop i work in, plus we try our hardest to get hold of rescue rabbit/guinea pigs. we get our budgies from a local breeder, our rats and mice come from my college.

but any specialist animals we have to order from the big breeders unfortuantely.

we decided to start get locally breed animals and breed the hamsters our self as it ensures us the age of the animals, the health, the health of the parents and the situation they are kept in.

Yes a pet shop that we use breeds his own hamsters and dwarf rabbits. My Russian, Tommy came from this pet shop although I know the man usually only breed Syrians.

They were breeding rats before taking on the pet shop

Re: Pet shops breeding their own stock

I think its a good idea too. An old pet shop, that sadly went out of business, used to do the same. In fact, I got Rosie from them. They had all her littermates together and her parents were able to be seen and met. That's the kind of pet shop I like

Re: Pet shops breeding their own stock

I think it's a great idea. THere is a pet shop in Edinburgh that breeds all their own rodents and gets birds in from local breeders too. I think they sounds great and from the piccies i've seen their stock is very healthy (unfortunately not been allowed to go because apparently I have "enough" animals already

Re: Pet shops breeding their own stock

The pet shop near us breeds their own rodents. We've had a few gerbils from them in the past and they were in fantastic condition.
The woman even has pedigrees for us if we want gerbils for breeding
