I'd say mice, personally. They're really entertaining and while I did really like my hamster I prefer keeping pairs or groups of animals.
They require a bit more cleaning out than hamsters but they don't smell anywhere near as bad as I thought they would. plus if you already have hamsters then I reckon a change of pace would be nice.
