it very hard to say whats wrong and whats right with feeder rats in my opinion.
i have snakes myself and personally i could NEVER feed live food ! i have had baby snakes that wouldnt eat and i still didnt give live food as not just i couldnt but also as some people have said it is also risking the snakes getting an injury, my last resort when feeding snakes is force feeding. i buy mice and rats from my pet shop and to me they are already dead and ive gotten use to feeding them, although i would LOVE to have some pet rats but not aloud  they bloke with these rats as being extremly unreasonable and there is no need for an attitude like that non matter wether they are just rats to him or not they are an animal just like his snakes ! i hope they get a really good home and the female does well if she sadly is pregnant
