Re: Albino Rat
Not very rare at all, I'm afraid: most laboratory rats are albino.
More commonly known as Pink-eyed White, [PEW], because there's more than one way to get a white rat with pink eyes.... One of course is the genuine albino gene, but very often combinations of other colour genes can give you a rat which is white with pink eyes, a 'fake' albino if you like.

It depends on what other colours the parents carried. If they both carried the albino gene, then yes, the white kits would most likely be genuine albino. But let's just say, for an example, they both also carried the gene for Siamese (ivory coat, red eyes, brown on nose, ears feet & tail) and a gene for Champagne (pink eyes, very pale beige coat colour). Some of the 'white' babies could be Champagne-pointed Siamese... the colour on the nose, ears feet etc would be soooo pale as to be invisible, and the rat would look like an albino. We have a variety in the UK here called Roan (aka Husky). They are born a solid colour with white markings but gradually get more & more white hairs in their coats as they age, often ending up looking like a black-eyed white. One well known pet store chain here has been selling Champagne Roans. These silver out to white as well, and as their base colour (Champagne) is a pink-eyed colour, they look just like pink-eyed whites/albinos when older.

Re: Albino Rat
So someone (like me for example) who didnt have a clue (until u explained) could think they have a albino but really they could a "fake" one unless other wise stated.
