Re: Albino Rat
Wow, I'd love to be able to understand genetics but it looks so complicated, I don't suppose you could recommend any books, preferably quite simple ones as I'm quite interested in learning about the genetics of the fancy rat

I'll do a basic run down. Each rat has 2 genes for each trait (Fur colour, fur marking, eye colour, ear positioning, fur curlyness etc) one obtained from each parents. each gene they inherit determines what they'll look like. Some genes are dominant over others and will show even if they only inherit one gene from one parent and some are recessive and have to inherit both genes for the trait to show through. I'll use the example of dumbo/top ears. Dumbo is a recessive gene. For the trait of dumbo ears to show through, the rat needs to have inherited 2 dumbo genes from the parent. Lets call the dumbo gene 'Du', so a rat with dumbo ears has 'DuDu'. A rat with top ears can have a recessive 'Du' gene which won;t show through but can be passed onto its offspring, resulting in them having a Du gene. This is how rats can be dumbo but have 2 top eared parents. If we call the topear gene Te, rats like this would be 'TeDu' Rats can also have 2 top eared genes, which means that only top eared would be passed to the offspring. These rats are 'TuTu' Does that make any sense? ![]() Once you have the basic concept it's mainly about learning what is recessive and what is dominant. There's obviously more complex things than that to it but that's the basics ![]() Some others - Roan is recessive (The offsrping have to inherit 2 roan genes for the markings to show through) Rex is dominant (2 rex genes also make a double rex) Standard coat is recessive Hairless is recessive Dark eyed is dominant Red eyed is recessive Black or Agouti is dominant Afraid I can;t recommend any books however I think there is a site called hawthorn rat genetics that is very useful ![]() Peace Akai-Chan |

Re: Albino Rat
thanks for the crash course, I had a look on Amazon & there were a couple of books that were just about rat genetics but the cheapest copy was £80 so unless I decide to breed in the future I think I'll leave it for now & get a book on general genetics for now
