Unhappy Cold? Allergies?

Hi,

I am a new hamster mommy and my little baby (Peanut) has been sick. He started out by sneezing and having a runny nose. I have had him to the vet twice and he has been on two rounds of antibiotics(7-10 days each round). During the antibiotics and for 3-7 days afterward he seems to be fine. Then he starts sneezing again and having some nasal discharge and the sneezing becomes more frequent until the poor little thing is sneezing almost constantly. He doesn't sneeze as much when he is out of his cage (on my lap, hiding in the blankets on my bed and playing peek a boo). I have tried shredded paper bedding, nesting bedding (kinda like cotton), and carefresh. He is on a pellet diet with some treats (corn, peanuts, apples, sunflower seeds, etc).

Peanut is still very active and eats and drinks normally. He hasn't lost any weight. I don't know if it will do any good to take him to the vet again since he's already been on antibiotics twice. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!

Re: Cold? Allergies?

I'm not an expert with hamsters but have kept rats for 16 years that are very prone to lung problems. Solds more like an allergy if he's fine out of the cage as well as his bedding what are you using in base of cage eg Shavings. I used to use this with the rats but found a recyled paper cat litter is great and seemed to resolve that i haven't had a lung problem for a long time now Tesco and Pets at Home do the one i use can't remember the make but its in a green bag. Also if it is an allergy is there anything around the cage eg plants, airfreshner?
