[URGENT] Guinea Pig Problems

Hello there.

About 2 and a half weeks ago, one of my guinea pigs gave birth - She had been made pregnant at the pet shop, and this was unknown to me until I saw two little guinea pigs sitting in the corner of the hutch.

The problem is: One is a boy, and one is a girl.

and the other problem is that the male baby guinea pig mounted his mother, sending the three female pigs who were in the cage wild, making sounds they have never made before.

The male guinea pig has been separated temporarily, but I really don't have any clue as to what I am supposed to do!

When do I separate them?
What should I do with the male guinea pig?
At what age does a male guinea pig reach puberty?
What advice would you give me!?!

Thanks.

Re: [URGENT] Guinea Pig Problems

I would seperate them by 12 weeks as these little critters reproduce quickly!

Red face Re: [URGENT] Guinea Pig Problems

Male guinea pigs should be taken away from mom at 3-4 weeks,3 weeks if strong 4 if not or they will mate.....
Females come into season every 15-17 days.....

What a rubbish pet shop that must have been - Guineas are easy to sex!

When I bred guineas I used to have a male hutch & a female hutch (the double storey hutches are ideal for this)

The little boy will get lonely on his own so you may want to think about getting a chum for him. Or if you dont want to do this then find him a home he can be introduced to a new friend.

Re: [URGENT] Guinea Pig Problems

As Tory has said they come into season from 3-4 weeks old and the boars can try and do their stuff from that age too!! I would recommend, selling him back to the pet shop or buying another boar friend for him and make sure it is a boar, lol!! They are very social creatures and he will wheek when you take him away at first but if he has a pal they should bond and get along without a problem.
