Question Need help - Hamster breeding.

Hello. I have a male and a female hamster kept apart of course) and I was considering breeding. However, I would like some advice first. I've never bred from hamsters before and do not want to enter it lightly. Firstly, I was worried that my two would not be suitable, as my female is one year older than the male and is around two years old. Is that too old for a hamster? Would it be better the breed from a younger one?

Also, I was also wanting to know a little bit about housing for the babies. I know hamsters tend to fight amongst each other and would like to know around which age the babies should be seperated, should I go ahead and breed.

Answers to these questions and any extra information would be absolutely brilliant. Thank you.

Re: Need help - Hamster breeding.

Your female Hamster is much too old to be a mum sadly, she will be infertile at that age anyway. Females must be bred for the first time between 4 - 6 months as after this their hip bones fuse leading to birth complications. Males can be bred from for as long as they are capable of the act

Babies have to be separated into single sex groups around 4 - 5 weeks, the females can stay with mum as long as she will tolerate them, but keep a close watch for squabbles which quickly turn nasty. They have to be housed singly from about 7 weeks old.

Hope that helps

Re: Need help - Hamster breeding.

Hey, thanks, that's a great help. I didn't think she would be able to have babies at her age anyway, so it didn't surprise me. I was looking to get another hamster anyway.

Thanks again for the help.
