Re: i saw a degu....i might have to have it....
If you get one you'll have to get another from somewhere else. Degus HAVE to be kept in pairs as they can die from depression or loneliness if left on their own.
As for cage, For mine I have a plastic duna base (Without the wire bit) and a tall thin cage on top of it, means I can put lots of hay/wood shavings down in the bottom in the duna cage without them chucking it out Lots of shelves are essential so they can climb and run about, as are lots of chew toys. They're pretty easily amused, cardboard tubes etc are good for play toys. Most people recommend a wooden nesting box for them, but I have a chewed up rodent ball with lots of hay in that they LOVE.Food - Chinchilla food. all the stuff they need with no added sugar, additives or preservatives. You shouldn't feed them sugary stuff as they can't digest it and it'll make them ill. They're really fun little creatures though Once they're tame they're great fun to play with. May be a bit nervy at first but once they overcomes that they're wonderful ^_^Sorry if you knew all this stuff before, not everyone does! Peace Akai-Chan |

Re: i saw a degu....i might have to have it....
then why do they sell them separatly
thats so sad! that means i defo cant get him because i havnt got enough money for 2 cages are you sure they die without another one? they say the same about robos? but its not really true...there was a cage i lied the look of at pets at home, but it wasnt the best ever... and i got a help sheet thing, and it said to feed them guinea pig nuggets...

Re: i saw a degu....i might have to have it....
They probably sold the other 3 at once or sold 2 and one died or something, I don't know. either way they shouldn't be selling them singly. You don't have to buy 2 cages, it's just what I do for mine
How much is he? He is a male right? and yes they do get very depressed without another one and can die. Which cage was it? Guinea pig nuggets can also work, I just use chinchilla pellets as from other shops I can get bigger bags for cheaper and the degus still love it, though P@H do sell degu food now but it's a bit expensive! Re: i saw a degu....i might have to have it....
In a gerbilarium it's the same with any animal, he can get his feet stuck and if they get stuck he can break his leg (A friends degu did this). The cage I have is basically a gerbilarium but with solid shelves, not wires. You could probably buy more levels separately, dunno what cage you're talking about though
What I was saying is you don't need to put 2 cages together like I did, you can just buy one if you wanted, I just wanted one with a tank for a base because they throw the hay around everywhere, and this way they have an extra level ![]() Tempted to get him but I'm trying to save money >_< Plus I want gerbils first! ![]() Peace Akai-Chan |

Re: i saw a degu....i might have to have it....
Oooooh that cage... Yeah if you buy some wooden shelves to go in there and things like hanging toys, tubes, hidey holes etc it'd be fine. Plus if you buy wooden shelves, you can change where they are in the cage every week so the degus don't get bored
![]() I'm not sure how big the gerbilarium is, it might be too small. You would still definitely need to get another one (Preloved is a good place to start) and introducing them shouldn't be a problem if they are young (Find a way to split cage down the middle and put one in on each side for about a week so they can sniff eachother etc then take the separator away). I think the cage in the pic is an ok size though The bottom wires you can just cover really thickly with hay so their feet don't come into contact with the wire, but it'll still be messy! To reduce mess, you could find a box big enough to put the cage in so that the box reaches up 3-4 inches from the bottom of the cage (if that makes sense) so that hay etc won't fall out ![]() Peace Akai-Chan |
