Escaped and fell down the stairs. =[

Got a call from the OH's house mate last night to say there was a hamster running around the spare room. Rushed over, and found Wing under the bed (I hadn't put the lid the cage back on properly and he squeezed out). He managed to run past us all, onto the landing. I legged it after him but heard a thump, and knew that he'd fallen off the landing down the stairs. Luckily not onto the concrete bottom, but the bottom, carpeted step. Scooped him up and checked him over, and his back legs were very purple and swollen. Put him back in his (properly shut) cage and he seemed find running around, though dragging his back legs a bit- he could move them a bit though. It was horrible to watch him trying to get up his tube. Anyway he went and had some food and water then went in his bed so we left him alone. I was really worried that he'd have died during the night from internal bleeding, but the OH said that he is fine this morning, running around and seeming happy enough, though his back legs still aren't right.

So.. um.. what should we do, just hope for the best, or is there still a chance that the fall might have done some serious damage? I'd assume that a trip to the vets, though might been given something for his legs, if there was internal bleeding, he'd be put down...

Hoping he's ok though. =[

I think I would agree a vet visit is sensible, at least the vet might be able to give some pain killers, I know I would be a bit sore if I had fallen down the stairs.

Can he move his back legs at all? Or is constantly dragging them?

A trip to the vets is a very good idea

Re: Escaped and fell down the stairs. =[

The swelling has gone down a lot, but they still look a bit purple. He seems to be getting around a lot better now too, though still limps a little.

Overall, he seems ok.

Obviously, when he wakes up properly tonight and he looks like he is in a lot of pain, then I'll take him to the vets. I just don't want to have to go and for them to say there is nothing they can do.

Re: Escaped and fell down the stairs. =[

He's doing fine now.

By the evening of the next day the swelling on one foot had gone down completely, and there was only a very very tiny swelling and a hint of purple on the other.

More than a week later and he is back to normal, and has been for a while. (He was running in his wheel the next night!) He gets around fine and is eating and drinking normally too.

I'd have thought that if he was suffering from internal bleeding or something, as they are so small, I'd have seen effects from that the next day. So I assume that he is healthy! Just thankful that he landed on the bottom step that was wood and not the concrete floor!!
