Cheek pouches

Ok, cheek pouches. Why do hamsters store food in their cheek pouches? Do their cheek pouches get impacted? Why? How do you...umm... unload the cheek pouches? and how do you know their cheeks are impacted?

Re: Cheek pouches

Well in my experience they just put food in their pouches to transfer it from one place to another - usually their bed. I have had quite a lot of hamsters over the years and never had one with inpacted pouches - they usually just empty them themselves.

Same here, never had any problems with impacted cheek pouches

Re: Cheek pouches

Mine fill theirs up and immediately run to bed and empty their pouches or if they are out in the playpen, i find it in the little house that I put in there. Its quite cool to watch them filll them up, they get loads in there and then their cheek pouches are huge! lol

Re: Cheek pouches

They look so cute when they fill their pouches! Mine always run off to the bed or Mr Tibbs likes to keep them in the tubing so inbetween running in the wheel she can nip off and have a quick snack!

Re: Cheek pouches

As long as you dont feed them anything stupid, then the pouches should never get impacted.

I dealt with one case where a young girl gave hers a whole brazilnut and once it was in there, the poor creature couldnt get it out again without assistance.
