Question Hamster cage

I have a cage with 2 floors, can the hamster fall off it and hurt itself or does it know what its doing? Also at night, can the hamster be in pitch dark?

Re: Hamster cage

hamsters are nocturnal so yes they are fine in the dark and can probably see better. They are good climbers so they should be fine on a 2 teir cage accidents do happen but userally they are perfectly fine and they LOVE to climb!

Re: Hamster cage

My Syrian Buffy lived in a three tier cage until very recently, she loved it and she has only been moved into a new cage because she is very old and was finding it hard to climb. she occasionally fell off one level but I always made sure she had a deep level of shavings so she had a nice soft landing. They acrually seem to prefer the dark and get more active when I turn the lights out.

Re: Hamster cage

Syrian hamsters have very poor eyesight even in good light, they mostly get information about the world around them by smell and hearing and can usually only see very close up. I have never used Megazorb but it is very safe.

Re: Hamster cage

Hamsters will be fine in the dark infact, a lot of them are happier in the dark during the night. Also, they will be fine climbing.

Re: Hamster cage

Yeah they'll be fine, as long as there is a a couple of inches of sawdust for them to fall on to. You could position the shelfs so that they never fall too far if you are scared of hurting themselves. Wire based cages or cages with wire shelves should NEVER be used because your hamster may get bumblefoot, which needs vetinary care and is painful for your hamster!

Should be fine. My acrobat hamster Misty is in a three tier and has never had any problems despite falling often! I put plenty woodshavings on the base of the cage though too.
