Re: nipping rat

Nope but she may be quite lonely being alone for the night - if after playtime no real issues arise i would jut leave them in together better than splitting up.

Re: nipping rat

what kind of signs should i be looking for if my adult is feeling territorial towards the baby?? i put them in the adults aquarium with no food or any other distractions so they could get to know one another. at first all gaz, the adult, did was throw her aquarium bedding around abit. but then the baby, tac, started to crawl all over gaz and started to groom gaz. and all gaz did was smell tac a few times. would it be safe to put them together soon?? btw, my wife was not happy about putting them both in the aquarium together at the same time although nothing happened.

Re: nipping rat

sounds good to me, rats grooming is very like monkeys grooming, mutual benefit, builds trust and gets them used to each other, sounds like they will get on.

they are female right? the older one might decide that she's mum anyway and then you'll have no problems, problems usually only arise when you have a hoard like me and one takes umbridge to new babies getting 'mums' attention.

i'd stick them together if no fighting has been seen at all so far, and it's been a few days, then you've no problems at all.

Re: nipping rat

just a quick bit of advice - you say aquarium? Does your rats home have wire parts of there home? Rats are best off kept in a cage with bars as they are very active little things and love to climb. I kept a pair in a tank style home once just whilst doing intros and they went mad and turned slightly aggressive. As soon as they had integrated in with other lot and switched to bared cage were like completely different rats.

Re: nipping rat

yeah. well the aquarium is just temporary. when i get back from the vacation i am going on, my plan is to get a larger cage to house both of them. i mostly housed gaz(the adult) in the aquarium only because the shop that we got her from housed both males and females together and i wanted to make sure that if she was pregnant, which she isn't, that her and the baby's could not get out. so there will be about 7-10 more days of her living in there. i get back from vacation next wednesday. but until then she gets the aquarium. but i do try to keep it about as clean as possible with my hectic work schedule.

Re: nipping rat

aquariums are easier to keep clean than bars bloody nightmare they are, make sure whatever cage you get the bars are coated with plastic or they just end up minging.

:P bleh!
