Woodchip or Carefresh?

I breed gerbils and I've always used woodchip but then I started reading up on this carfresh and a litter of babies got a respiritory infection, so I read that carefresh was better to use as theres no dust.
So I've switched to carefresh now to see if it helps any.

So I was just wondering what do you other breeders use?

Re: Woodchip or Carefresh?

I use regular dust extracted wood shavings. And i mix some hay and p@h safe bedding in. (i only use the safe bedding when i know that i have a pregnant female who is due)

Re: Woodchip or Carefresh?

Do you have alot of problems with respiritory infections?
Do you think the carefresh will make any difference? There is a big price difference between the two :O Just wondering because if the woodshavings isn't what causes respiritory infections then it means I don't have to keep buying the carefresh... I guess I should just wait and see what suits my gerbils?

Re: Woodchip or Carefresh?

I've used the wood shavings on all 20 of my gerbils for roughly 2 years and i've never had any problems with respiratory infections
I do like carefresh but with 20 gerbils, it would work out far too expensive to buy all of the time.
It's more or less whatever you and your gerbils feel comfortable with

Re: Woodchip or Carefresh?

Yeah when I used to breed I used woodshavings and never had a problem. Think I just got a bit freaked out when they got the infection haha but it's ment to be common in gerbils and rats.. apparently lol.
Yeah I think I'll just stick to care fresh the now, see how it goes. Thanks for your help
xx
