Question Rats any help appreciated

I am after a dumbo rat have a large cage already, i had been looking in pets at home and other big pet stores , but i have decided against buying one from there most of my animals are rescues, but as im new to rats i want babies, i am going to have a look at two males tomorrow night , they will be ready the 25th of march, but im not sure should i have the two ? do males smell as ive heard they urinate and mark there territory, but people say they are more lazy, i have hamsters gerbils and i want a rat the will sit on my lap or shoulder not one thats running a riot, not when it is older anyway .i am going to look at kkpets in glos.

When i had male rats, they never stunk. It is true that they will mark their territory but i find that they don't smell
Rats do better in pairs or small groups, they highly sociable animals

Re: Rats any help appreciated

Hi
I have two male rats, and they are the best pets I have ever had. One is really hyper and runs all the over the place, (so believe me they aren't all lazy), and my other rat is really quiet outside the cage but happily will sit still on you, and grinding his teeth happily. They don't smell, just make sure you clean them out quite regularly and you will be fine!

Hope to see pics soon!!!

I wouldnt say they are lazy just slower then Gerbs and you will find this...

They are best kept in pairs or groups.

Add some hammocks to the cage they simply LOVE them and i remember ever so slightly that one of the rats liked to come to carboots with us and have a noesy at the stalls lol.

sorry theres me waffeling on ^^ lol.

Great advice guys (Y)

Rats are fabulous pets x
Male rats dont smell it's their urine that smells so regular cleaning will eliminate this. Ive owned rats for over 10 years now and they are the most loving and friendly animals. You will love the new additions to your family. Good Luck x

You will get on fine with rats if you put in the effort like with any pet. I have rats that sit on my shoulder whilst I am on the computer because I have trained them to do so whilst a couple of rescues that I have would never go on my shoulder and will run riot given half a chance.
With my boys I always have a few packs of value baby wipes and every day when playing with them I give the ladders etc a quick wipe as it helps to keep everything fresh. All pets have a certain odour and you will find that rats, male or female are the same but if you make sure you clean them out regularly it shouldnt be a problem.

Good luck with choosing your ratties....

Sharon

Re: Rats any help appreciated

stick them on your shoulder.

basically is all there is too it, if they like being up there they will eventually make their way up there of their own accord, if they don't don't force them to do it.

Some rats are shoulder riders, others don't like sitting still and will just clamber on you, you may find that your's aren't shoulder lovers while young but like it when they're getting on abit.

Remember when you first get them they will be scared of you and be abit upset from the move andnew surroundings they probably won't sit still on you for long periods of time until they're really used to you and know you want drop them.

Once they're really confident they will do lots of amusing stuff like climb all the way up you while your standing just to get to your shoulder.
