Small pet cages.
I'm just wondering if anyone knows or has tried attaching diffirent types together. I ordered some rotastak a while back and they still haven't turned up yet. We were so excited about getting gerbils we went ahead and got a tempoary resonable sized cage by fop i found a pick on google https://www.pet-supply-store.co.uk/p...575125-300.jpg this is almost my cage.
Well the little things on top can come off and you can put tubes in them. But I'm wondering if anyone knows if you can attach diffirent brands like rotastak to them. If not then I guess I'll use the cage as a spair since I was planning on getting hamsters. It's not like the gerbils need the space because it's a big cage that I got them it's just I figured they might like the extra space. Which is why I planned on rotastak because you can extend it but I was also thinking of something simular for the hamsters too. |

Re: Small pet cages.
Rotastak is ok right? I made sure I got one that had an area i could stack up so they could burrow though either sawdust or peat or something of the sort. This is the cage they were keeping them in in the pet store but I have a really big one coming this week.
Rotastak Creepy Castle Hamster, Gerbil, Mouse Cage New on eBay, also, Hamsters, Pet Supplies, Home Garden (end time 01-Mar-09 22:21:47 GMT) mainly got this one as it was the bigest I could find for my budget (I spent £100 on the gerbils this month) I was going to get an extention as I can aford it each month. But the cage I have now I was hoping to use as an extended area for them. Is it not sutable because it's too small? Would it be ok as an extra area? |

Re: Small pet cages.
no its just not suitible, they like to dig!
i would suggest a Tank, with a wire mesh top, that has a hole in it so you can add a tube (reli long) to them cages, The creepy castel is nothing special, but its great that your adding extensions !! ive spent £834.13 on Just hamsters since may, on food, cages, shavings, toys, Cremation etc lol xx another £70 soon on 2 more cages 1 for oliver & 1 for chloe xx

Re: Small pet cages.
The fish tank idea is a pretty good one actually. I've seen those really big plastic ones go for like £15-£20 and you can make a hole in the crate thing which was what I was eventually planning on doing. What I mean is how this person has done it: Gerbil Cages. second picture down. With the cage I have I was going to use the bit at the top to add a tube to connect it and then have the castle 'main' area as a burrow area just for now untill I get paid again when I can get a tank of some description to make into a bigger burrowing area.

Re: Small pet cages.
We got them yesterday in that cage I showed you first... thats what they had them kept in in the petshop. I knew gerbils love digging and I thought that they would at least have a better place to run around as soon as i get the big cage which is due on mon-tue. I am def gonna do that with the fish tank things. I looked at that page before I brought them with that in mind.
I am debating about hamsters at the moment. But we got the gerbils so we want to make their living space as big as possible before getting any other pets. They are living on a shelf in my walk in cuboard because it's a really quite place and out of the dirrect light. They seem pretty happy in there. But that cage is aweful and I feel really sorry for them. It won't be long before their extention arrives though. I'll post a pick when I have it set up how I want it. What kind of cages do you keep your hamsters in? I was considering hamsters soon (not right now because I just got the gerbils). Edit: Oh and I have 2 but the petshop guy doesn't know if they are boys or girls but they came as a same sex pair. I'm waiting till I hand tame them a little to find out. We called them Cires and Sakura. |

the pet shop should always sex an animal before they sell to you, especially if you've bought a pair! How can he say they're a same sex pair when he doesn't know what sex they are? get them sexed asap, you don't want to be having babies!!Also, make sure you get one of those types of cages that are on the 'Gerbil Cages' site. Gerbils are very different to hamsters and mice as they prefer to have deep spaces to dig and tunnel, a hamster cage will not cut it for a gerbil, they need depth in their cages, and quite a lot of it. They also need a cage area on top of that. If you type 'Gerbilarium' into Google, it should give you an idea of proper Gerbil housing. The Pets At Home Gerbilarium seems quite suitable, i'd reccommend that. Last edited by Verbatim; 23-02-2009 at 12:46 AM.. |

Re: Small pet cages.
Yeah I liked the look of the gerbillarium too. But I looked at that website and saw that you could mix rotastak with a tank. I'll have to go to the petshop again and get them one of those big plastic tanks and see if they have some peat or something they can dig around in. They don't look pregers... yet... evil shop keeper! lol. I'd feel aweful if they had babies, it's really not fair to keep gerbils on their own and i wouldn't want to seperate them. I'd end up keeping babies! lol.
