Rotastak aaargh

Just bought a rotastak cage for the meeces, I got it reduced from £20 to £10 and I thaught it looked a bit more fun than the average cage and it would be great to add on to. It didn't have a wheel so that cost another £6 on Ebay, the wheel arrived today and it was time to put the furries in. I knew it would be ok for hamsters, mice or gerbils cos it said so on the box, and the makers wouldn't lie would they?. So why have I just spent the last two hours searching the bedroom for 5 missing meeces who had gone awol. With 4 cats in the house I have to admit I expected the worst, but they are all back in their old cage now. If it isn't suitable for mice why say it is, and the tubes seem too small for hamsters n gerbils, what a bargain that was.

Re: Rotastak aaargh

The middle part is bars and the two other ends are plastic, as nowhere is chewed and all the holes are still covered with the little caps, I can only imagine they have squeezed through the bars. They have spent ages trying to squeeze through the bars in the original cage since I put them back so that is a clue, the old cage is a proper mouse cage so the bars are much closer together.

Re: Rotastak aaargh

Maybe put some wire mesh where there are bars so they can't squeeze out?

Re: Rotastak aaargh

You can get really really fine gauge mesh by just taking the frame off an old fire guard (if you have one to spare that is). Only thing is it's usually a woven mesh, not welded, so eventually it all unravels at the edges.

Re: Rotastak aaargh

I have heard a few people say they have had both mice and dwarf hamsters escape through the bars of rotastak.I agree they should not say they are suitable when they are not !!
Glad you got them all back safe

Re: Rotastak aaargh

you should write to rotastak to complain that they are falsely advertising their product for animals it's not suitable for.

poor micas, bet the woudl have loved the rotastak stuff too hope you fix the bars so they can't squidge through again

Re: Rotastak aaargh

Phoned Rotastak careline today, got myself all ready for a fight and I didn't get one. The very nice lady appologised for any trouble caused, asked how much it cost me, then took my details and said she would put a cheque in the post today for the full amount. (Thanks for the idea owieprone)
