Cages for rats

Hi there,

Just wondering what people think are the best and which are the cages to avoid.

I'm thinking of putting some reviews on my rat cage website together with maybe a list of the top 5 and get people to vote. Hoping it might be handy resource for people thinking of buying a new one.

Any comments people may have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

nic

Re: Cages for rats

i would say to avoid any cages that don't have plastic coated bars, as rat urine clings to metal/chrome plated bars making the cage smell and age prematurely.

any cage with larger or many doors are best as it helps when cleaning.

we've got the ferret cage futret tower, i can actually GET IN up to my waist through the doors to get to the back, and the top cage door is also huge. The only down side is having to take the top cage off to clean any ledges in the bottom part of the cage or take the ledges off to clean them. It can't be done by one person, so need to be very bendy if no OH to help.

Jenny rat cages are a good size but bars arent coated and the doors are too small and in the wrong places.

Re: Cages for rats

A lot of people seem to start off with a Jenny cage but I think they are terribly over priced and you can get something much bigger and better for the same amount of money. Its poorly made with small doors and uncoated bars which are all a no no in a good cage.
I actually use the Superpet Deluxe Multi Floor ferret cage which I love! But it is only suitable for adult male rats usually, as the bar spacing is rather wide. But it has endless possibilties for making the inside interesting and plenty of room for a small group of rats, my guys love it!

Re: Cages for rats

Freddy 2 cage good but only suitable for upto 4 rats (3 if boys).

Excellent access and really easy to clean, i use mine as a first cage before introducing new ones into larger, main cage (feret tower). Good for babies as small bar spacing.

Thumbs up Re: Cages for rats

I have a midwest ferret nation 3 tier cage. It's nearly as tall as the room, much taller than me, and if you took everything out I can stand up in it with room to spare, I'm 5'6" and can get into each seperate section. All 3 sections can be used seperate to each other, great when cleaning as it is large enough to shut all rats in 2 sections while you clean the others. It has 3 plastic pull out trays, easy for cleaning, and 3 detachable shelves, for thos of us who can't reach them to clean. In the summer we're going to take it apart as this is pretty easy so we can get it outside to power wash it. The hammertone finish as easy to clean and the cage itself is very open which is better for my rats with rerspitory illnesses. The cage was designed for ferrets so very rat friendly although I know someone who said her girls who are slimmer could get through the bars. It's a pricey cage, over £400 from most places, but it is totally worth it and the best I've seen so far.

Re: Cages for rats

I have Jenny's but despite them being a decent size, I think they are terrible to clean/get to know nervous rats with their small doors, awquard layout. Also as others as mentioned, they go rusty very quickly. You can coat the bars and buy bigger doors but I think it would just be better to get a different cage. I am getting an explorer soon which alot of my friends have. The wadrobe style doors should offer much easier access than the Jenny's.

Re: Cages for rats

I had a Jenny cage to start with but when I lifted it to move some of the bars actually broke. Sure you shouldn't lift a cage that size by the bars but even so we'd had it about 4 months and expected a better quality build then that.
