Ralph.. well its looking

Like My Ralph.. Is nearly or totally blind..

He is struggling to get about.. dont get me wrong he can get about .. But he aint right.. I was showing my mum today and she agreed its not really fair on him.. as he is in a very tall cage with different levels..

In fact in front of us he nearly fell off a shelf..

Now guys she made a suggestion.. thoughts please..

He loves to be groomed by the rats.. But they are quite big too him and he has got some war wounds.. But I have not witnessed how they have happened.

My mum suggested.. Pop him in with the babies..
Now Rhoddi is meant to be going with them.. But he is still bashing them.. So I am going to book him in to be done..

And then when he is all healed My mum said maybe try intro Ralph and the babies.. With him..
I dunno.. she was thinking also Rhoddi's cage would be better for him and the babies are quite friendly...
Pinky and Perky are huge rats now.. And squeaky is still the mardy..

My lordies what do you guys think..

Re: Ralph.. well its looking

I think you need to send him to live with me to be cuddled all the time therefore he wont need eyesight, problem solved . I would have a go with the babies and see how it goes, if you end up having Rhoddi neutered he could join that group once hes calmed down.

haha Ralph doesn't mind a quick cuddle.. or too sit on your shoulder but he rather be with the Rats unlike Rhod the Knob..lol who is a small human.. hahahahha

Just very frightened to get him done..

Also Ralph has been blind in one eye for ages.. Just he defo looks like he has lost a sense..now.. But couldn't get the light on his eye proper to check the other though is cloudy..

I bathed him in tea tree to help soothe his wounds..

Re: Ralph.. well its looking

I agree with TDM see how it goes, one of my older boys I believe is blind but it doesn't seem to affect him in any way, I do though make sure I talk to him before I pick him up as I have startled him by accident when I went to stroke him at geeing time. He was a rehome from preloved so I don't know If he was born like or it developed. I've been thinking about getting one of my other rats done as I've been bitten by him again today I'm a bit scared to aswell

Re: Ralph.. well its looking

Ralph isn't biting the babies.. He is bashing them and has grabbed and pulled them.. They get scared when he gets like this..but as soon as he stops they try and follow.. If in his cage he wont let them out the castle.. Or he chases them till they get back in the castle.. so far no blood.. I just want to be able to let them in there in the end with out the worry..

Re Ralph, Rhoddi did bite him bad and Ralph is like the lowest in the food chain of the boys.. But maybe when he is done if bonded with babies he will except them.. I dont know.. Maybe Rhoddi will only be happy with people..

My mates just beed round.. We had Rhoddi and babies out.. As soon as I went over Rhoddi was trying snuggle into me as if to say dont go near them horrid babies mommy.. LOL My non rat friend said this.. hahahah

Re: Ralph.. well its looking

From my hours of research on rats I've learned quite a lot about them and apparently they don't have very good eyesight anyway especially rats with red or pink eyes. Which is why they sort of head bob from side to side as they're trying to work out depth of things around them. But their main sense is their sense of smell. So being blind shouldn't really effect them too badly. But I would try and make sure that my hand smelled the same everytime I touched him so he'd know it was me. I dunno if this helps any with how you feel about him not being able to see but I think he'll do absolutely fine when you figure out the best group for him to be with and he's settled in!!

My issue is. My rats have large parrot cages as homes.. with many different shelves.. I would hate Ralph to fall, as me and my mum witnessed him nearly doing so.. The rats Ralph lives with are a lot bigger than him and its easy for them to bully him.. His brother was pts last summer and he has been much quieter since then.. Also their cage is a high one so they have many different levels.. and less floor space.. Now the other cage has more floor space but is high so Ralph wouldn't have to go higher up if he didn't want to.. Also the babies are very friendly and I think he may enjoy the friendly company.. His eyes are deep red and he has been definitely blind in one eye for a long time.. Now the other eye isn't looking great but hasn't clouded over completely..

I started off with 7 rats.. and had to split into two groups originally But then Jason.. (rip) kicked off so I popped the ones left with jason in with Pinky and Perky.. The huge boys.. Unfortunately Jase was PTS and left Rhoddi Rhoddi has become so reliant on me and wont entertain others.. bought babies to tyy one last time and he lets them about but does bash babies on head.. now Ii tried to intro Ralph with Rhoddi as he is very placid and Rhoddi ripped the back of Ralph necks..Now every night Rhoddi meets the babies but doesn't get left with them.. Im gonna have him done then in time will try him totally with them.. But in the mean time try intro Ralph with babies and then later intro rhoddi with them all...

Heads battered here..

Another thought if Ralph ok with bubs.. Should I buy Rhoddi a new cage and move bubs and ralph in then once all settle after peanuts are removed try intro Rhoddi back in his cage I don't know yet..:LOL guees when the time comes.. I will deal..
