Worried about Bigboy :(

Just been getting them all out for a muckout and noticed Bigboy not wanting to come out. When I finally dug him out of the igloo, he was very quiet in himself, very sedate, which isn't like him. He's got porph around his nose but it's so bright red and dripping into the crack of his lips that I can't tell if it's blood or not. His jawline is all swollen, and he won't let me look in his mouth. I'm dreading the thought of ZGT's He's going straight to the vets tomorrow, but just wondering if anyone thinks Metacam might be a good idea in case it is a mouth abcess or a bite etc? I'm shaking, I'm so worried about him, he looks absolutely miserable and it's too soon after losing Lavender to lose another one

Edit: When trying to get a peek into his mouth again, the side of his jaw which is swollen the most, the tissue inside appears very swollen as well...are the zymbals glands closer to the ears? His is just inside his mouth.

Re: Worried about Bigboy :(

There's a slim chance he could have....in a bid to get them to lose some weight I've made the cage layout a bit more challenging and they've been really enjoying it.
Managed to get some soft cereal, dog food and banana into him earlier so I'll try again later and use a syringe to get a better look inside his mouth.

Re: Worried about Bigboy :(

hope Bigboy has a good outcome tomorrow, with fern grove being good use to use with the dogs, i am sure they can do something for him, i am sure they will be able to sort him out for you, if u ring them they will probably give you maybe a small dosage of the Metacam while you wait until tomorrow, or if you cant i would get him checked out ASAP.

hope everything goes well for him tomorrowxx keep us updated

Re: Worried about Bigboy :(

I've got Metacam here, just not sure if it'd help or not, I have no idea if it's a tumour or an abscess or what...

Re: Worried about Bigboy :(

could it be this?

Sialodacryoadenitis ("Red Tears")

Red tears, often seen in mice and rats, can be a result of a viral disease, mycoplasmosis, or as a sign of stress. Often it is hard to tell what is actually causing the problem. The condition appears as if blood is coming from the animal's eyes. In the viral infection, usually the salivary and tear glands are involved. Because rodents have porphyrins (pigments) in their tears, any discharge will be seen as red tears. Treatment is symptomatic and involves topical eye medication.
found it on a website on rodents

Re: Worried about Bigboy :(

Nah porph's just a sign of stress, it won't make his mouth swell like it has...

I was just saying there was so much porph on his nose it was hard to tell if it was that or blood (i.e he may have been bitten on the face hence the swelling) but his nose was clear when I checked him again, that little jaw is still swollen.

He's all weak from not being able to eat Just got him out to check him properly (and hold his mouth open with a syringe) didn't need to see, it STANK of abscess D: In a way I guess that's good news cuz I can blast it with antibiotics, can anyone help me with a dosage? I've got 2.5% oral Baytril and Loxicom for dogs as pain relief, just need to go and weigh him.

ETA: he's 464g

Re: Worried about Bigboy :(

toby is on baytril atm its a good pain reliever and a good anti microbal medication.
what is the measurments on the syringe? toby is on 0.6ml but he is a dog, i would start on a low dosage for now depending on how strong the actual medication is, then if that isnt working then increase the dosage depending on whether its tablet form or liquid.

there is an animal medication dosage calculator if u are stuck
http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/script...nimalquery.cfm

hope this helps
