Question Should I be concerned about my guinea pig?

I have had my Guinea Pig Skootles, since he was weaned off his mother (almost 2 years). This morning (and I don't mean to be vulgar) I heard him fart, something he has either never done or never done in my presence at least. Should I be concerned? I know what Bloat is and what the symptoms are and I have already felt for a tight stomach during his morning look over and found him to be his usual self. He has been sick before so I know how he acts when he doesn't feel good. He is very active and is running around his cage as usual, his stomach feels fine, his eyes and nose are both clear, his teeth the usual length and he is eating and drinking as usual, all of which would indicate to me that he is healthy. I know that some vegetables give guinea pigs gas, but he refuses to eat any veggies. Yes, I know he is odd, the only way I can get him to get his vitamin C is by crushing up a guinea pig Vitamin C Tablet and giving it to him in some apple baby food. (apples are the only thing he will eat besides dehydrated carrots) However since I have never had a guinea pig before him I tend to get a little over worried sometimes. So should I be worried or does it just sound like a case of gas?

I've been trumped ON boy Ginge before and he's still doing fine. If you're worried then keep an eye on him but he sounds OK to me.

Re: Should I be concerned about my guinea pig?

Hi, are you absolutely sure he broke wind? Only guinea pigs can't do that.....neither can they be physically sick. That's why they suffer bloat.

You sure it wasn't something else? Creeky floor, someone in the room.....who tried to blame it on the guinea pig.....? lol.

Maybe it was a strange gurgle noise from their throat. Which happens from time to time, their coughing sounds like they've been sick but it's just a cough.

Also, just really hoping your guinea pig isn't by himself. Guinea pigs have to have a friend. Although introductions with two boars can be difficult - but there's plenty of advice online. A reason why a guinea pig won't eat veg can be down to not having a friend and therefore being unable to learn from one another.

For more info on guinea pig care - the forum theguineapigforum.com is really useful. It's completely dedicated to guinea pigs and the members and moderators are all guinea pig fanatics. Lots of vet nurses on there too.

Re: Should I be concerned about my guinea pig?

Yes I am positive, he even wiggled his little butt afterwards. I'm not sure what you mean by they can't physically be sick. Yes he is alone, although I would like to get one currently we do not have the space nor the funds to be able to get and house a second guinea pig. I'm not going to worry about the veggie thing because he is perfectly healthy on his current diet, perhaps this spring I'll try to get him to experiment a little bit.

Physically sick means that they can't vomit like some other animals.
