Feel like giving up!

As I said Chico is on a tablet form of antibiotics and it's practically impossible to get it down him! I went out and bought honey as someone suggested it and offered it to him and he turned his nose up at it! I then offered him jam, chocolate mousse, peanut butter, hot dog, cauliflower, broccoli, ham and carrot and he refused everyone of them. So I was like a junkie! I got some water on a tablespoon, put the tablet in it and heated the spoon up from underneath with a lighter until the tablet dissolved! The sucked it up with a syringe once cooled and grabbed him. I was pretty pleased with myself as I managed to get most of it in his gob and put him back on top of his cage where I had been holding him hostage and syringe point lol and he spat it out and then rubbed his chin along the bars just to make sure he'd gotten it all off him! They've been on them for well over a week now and tbh I've not noticed much change! Chico has shopped making pigeon noises but still seems to cough and Riley still sneezes though is having longer periods of not sneezing! They've got two days of tablets left and I can't imagine they'll change much. What should I do? Go back to the vets or do I listen to the vet and accept I'm not going to bo able to get rid of it and leave them alone! I want wants best for them but I also don't want to put them through more treatment if it won't help! I feel like I'm failing them!

Re: Feel like giving up!

Have you tried crushing the tablet and mixing it with malte paste, my lot would kill for malt paste. Its found in the ferret section in most pet shops.

Re: Feel like giving up!

Offer him some without any medication in then give him the meds then I'd offer it again without it
Mine love custard creams I'm pretty sure I could hide tablets crushed in the cream lol

Re: Feel like giving up!

Have you tried baby food? I had this same problem and I had 6 rats to medicate twice a day. It was taking me nearly 3 hours to get all their tablets and medicine in! SO I crushed their tablets with the end of a spoon and mixed it in some baby food- reduced my time to about half an hour!! As has been said you need to get then to like it first, but if he's not trusting you then you could put it onn a plate and leave him to eat it himself.

Re: Feel like giving up!

you could ask the vet if a Corvenia injection would be suitable -it's long lasting

The injection sounds like an excellent idea! Much less stressful for them too rather than having food thrust in their faces! Thanks!
