Cocoa skin problem?

Hi guys ,

looking for a bit of advice really , I noticed cocoa has been looking a bit 'dishevelled' for a couple of days but just thought its where she's been grooming herself? I decided to have a closer look today when I had her on my knee and she seems to have a bit of hair loss around where her shoulders are , her skin also looks quite red and sore , I feel really bad for not noticing it sooner She didn't shy away or squeak when I touched it and wondered if anyone knew what the problerm could be?

We have some dermol cream I was also wondering if that would be safe to put on her to help?

Can't take her to the vets tonight but if it gets any worse or you all think so I'll pop her in tomorrow for a look

Thanks

eta: I'll try upload a picture of it as well.

Re: Cocoa skin problem?

It could be mites. With mites, the fur loss/ itchy skin tends to be around the shoulders and sides of the face as they're the hardest bits to groom.

Re: Cocoa skin problem?

You don't need to go to the vets to treat mites. Stick her on the scales and find out how much she weighs. Then pop along to pets at home or somewhere similar and get some Bephar spot on. If she's under 300g you need the hamster/ mouse one. If she's more then 300g she can have the rat/ rabbit one. It's the same thing the vets would use (ivectermin), but a lot cheaper.

Re: Cocoa skin problem?

it wont hurt to do her cage mate, it may stop a cycle of one getting it then getting better then the other one doing it.

Bepher is pretty much what the vets use aswell and alot cheaper it does alot of different mites.

I would just clean up her scratch with clean warm boiled water and if you have any hibascrub you could pop a wee bit in the water aswell

Re: Cocoa skin problem?

When one of my girls have mites I only treat the one with symptoms. I do this because it's thought that rats have a small but constant population of mites. They get this through bedding/ food, and there's not a lot you can do about it. Under normal circumstances the rat keeps them under control, but if they feel under the weather they can have a flair up as they might not feel like grooming as much.
