Re: Its just a rat...
You will get used to it, I still get wise cracks now and then, and I really had to hold back when my grandad told me I should breed them for some extra money
(an innocent, uneducated remark, but having rats as long as I have, you'd think he knew where I stood on all that - I only have rescues...)Most people either don't bother anymore, or have come to love them as I do ![]() Even had my mum accompany me around the pound shops and Wilko's yesterday to find bargain bits and bobs for their cages!

Re: Its just a rat...
I get this attitude all the time, I think I may have lost friends because of it. I don't know what is so difficult to grasp about the fact that they are individual and have personalities - if you can't see that it is something lacking in you or your expectations, not the animals.
I've had people tell me I should sell all my rodents to buy a cat, or if I wanted to get rid of them they'd buy me a snake. I offered to buy them a crocodile to "get rid of" their cat for them and they got extremely offended! the attitude towards rodents is just truly appalling but whenever you call people on it they just think you are odd. The lifespan one I've asked if that means a parrot or a tortoise is worth more to them than a human being? my grandfather is dead, my grandmother is still alive - is she then "worth" more? Plus people tend to vastly underestimate rodent lifespans due to poor care or bad breeding - plenty of people belive 2 is old for a gerbil, whereas it is hardly into middle age...
