trimming hamster claws help

HELP

barney is getting old and less active (he's well over 2) but healthy and happy, his only problem is his claws growing fast.
i have had many hamsters and never had this prob before, i have had to trim his claws twice now in about a month, they are long and curled under, 1 was touching his pad
is this a common problem? any hints and tips for a very fiddly job ?
barney is very good natured and nevr bites but does object to this humiliating procedure

Re: trimming hamster claws help

you can try putting sandpaper on his wheel for him to run on for 5 minutes (never longer or itll wear at his paws and cause pain) each day and supervised until theyre down to size, you only need to do this when his nails are too long as everyday will shorten them too much

you can also boil a rock from your garden to sanitise it and put it in his cage under his water bottle so that he has to climb it to drink (it can be a low flat rock just aslong as its slightly rough and wide enough for him to climb onto)

or you can use a human nail file and hold him while you file his nails lol i do this as while i can trim teeth easily i dont dare cut their tiny nails incase they suddenly wriggle and lop off more than i intended

Re: trimming hamster claws help

Do NOT put sandpaper on the wheel that is very old, outdated, and potentially harmful advice im afraid

The best way is to put a rough rock or bit of terracotta under the water bottle, that will naturally wear the claws down safely
