My 2 Gerbils Midge and Fudge

I have 2 wonderful little gerbils called Midge and Fudge. They aren't actually tame but they are just so friendly. When I put my hand in they come over to me and sometimes they let me stroke them. What I can't believe is that they use a poo tray everyday. They are so clean. They chew toilet rolls and anything cardboard, and their bedding is just chewed up hay that they have daily and anything cardboard that they have chewed during the day. They dig for England and every few days I have to take some out some of it or else I wouldn't be able to get into their cage .

Re: My 2 Gerbils Midge and Fudge

They sound pretty tame to me!

I have three rescue gerbils with me. They will step on my hands and take treats, sometimes climb my top. I'd classify that as pretty tame. Anything that doesn't bite you in my mind is tame! Why do you think yours aren't? Genearlly curious because these are the first gerbils I've had and I was feeling pretty pleased on my progressive with them so far. Now I'm thinking, what else should my little beauties be doing?!

xxxx

p.s. they are gorgeous, I just love my gerbils to bits - they always seem so happy! Here's a pic of one of mine, it makes me laugh because it looks like she's waving! hehe.

Smile Re: My 2 Gerbils Midge and Fudge

Hi!

What a little sweetie you have. My daughter has just had Midge and Fudge out while cleaned their cage. Not that they were dirty the cage just gets dusty with all their digging. She had them running through her hands and they were having such a god time.

When they got back in their cage I replaced their sand as I do daily (they use it as a poo tray) and Fudge had a bath about 6 times, he loves it. Midge just likes kicking it out and making a mess.

I thought Midge was black but he has a lovely shiny coat and he's dark grey with a bit of white on his head and at the end of his tail.

I too just love them. I have just put a thread on about my Harvest Mice if you are interested

Re: My 2 Gerbils Midge and Fudge

Aww too cute. Your gerbils seem really big. I've had mine for about two months now, like I said they were from a rescue, the lady said they were dumped in a box, in the rain! We don't know how old they are but as they were left with three boys and none turned out to be pregnant she believed they must have been very young.

They just seem so so small though! Is that normal? They are girls. Will they grow any bigger? - they haven't grown since I've had them, they aren't big eaters either - although they will do anything for a sunflower seed and I do see them eat - but I weigh out the food for them everynight and it's mainly left untouched, so what I do is tip the contents onto the substrate and mix it in and then re-top up their food bowl as I know gerbils like to forage for food.

I think maybe they are eating it that way, they do go to the food bowl but just don't seem to eat that much from it, on the other hand if there was loads of food scattered about their tank then I guess I'd realise on clean out days - but there isn't really. So suppose I just answered my own question! lol

But yeah the weight/size thing? Is it ok if you have gerbils who are particularly tiny? or is there a growing period and they may still beef up and get bigger?

They must be approaching four months old.

Also I know you're not really supposed to keep three gerbils, but there was no way I was going to leave one behind without her sisters and the rescue didn't have any others they could be bonded with. They all seem to get along great though.

Re: My 2 Gerbils Midge and Fudge

As long as the 3 of them get on together then I wouldn't worry. The photo I put on of them was when they were babies. I guess they are just a normal size but look MASSIVE up against the Harvest Mice. Thery are about 9 months old I think. They slept so long yesterday I think my Daughter wore them out having them run around in the hall.
