New water bottle... not convinced!

I got sick of my ratties water bottle leaking ALL the time so I bought one of the glass ones with double ball bearing (it has a wee plastic carrot in it for a level indicator, hehe)

But I am not convinced my two are getting water out of it properly

Water does come out if I run my finger over the ball at the bottom, I have put the leaky one back in as well.

Has anyone else got these glass water bottles? Are they any good?

Re: New water bottle... not convinced!

I brought 2 of these (mine had ducks instead of carrots) The 1st one lasted 6mths before it started leaking, after about a year I've just replaced the 2nd one. That one also started leaking. I'm back to using the plastic ones now.

Re: New water bottle... not convinced!

I bought the rabbit sized one for a group of mice (the litre bottle i think, it has a duck inside it.) They manage that no problem, have you watched to see if a bubble rises in the bottle when your ratties are drinking? If it isn't then I would definitely say they aren't managing it

Re: New water bottle... not convinced!

I've had 2 glass bottles for the buns & both leak like crazy I'm quite miffed as they're expensive, the rats all have a couple of plastic ones each & I've never had a problem with them

Re: New water bottle... not convinced!

Have you tried pushing the spout into the white lid? The spout is removeable on mine and i found it only leaked when it was working out of the lid. Worth a shot. Mine never leaks now as long as I give the spout a push back in place when it's being cleaned out.

Re: New water bottle... not convinced!

Thanks will watch for bubbles, have to sit by the cage quietly until someone has a drink again- if I go near they run over to me!

I have Always had problems with plastic water bottles, doesnt matter what I do - they just drip all the time!

I think I'm going to give up and attach a coop cup holder to the cage and give them a dish of water they can't tip up! Though knowing them they would put bedding inside it

Re: New water bottle... not convinced!

I've recently started using a Critter Canteen bottle, which is spring loaded so the ball can never get stuck, it all seems very well put together, it works perfectly, the only problem I have is the bottle is blue opaque plastic, so you can't really see the water level unless you hold it in the light lol

Re: New water bottle... not convinced!

I tend to use a couple of plastic ones, one for backup so if one stops working, there is always one that is still working.
I don't use the glass ones but only because I know I would end up breaking them.
I have even managed to break a plastic one once, dropped it on a concrete floor outside and the end smashed.

Mind you, Ebony destroyed more than his fair share of plastic water bottles when I was keeping him in quarantine when I first got him, he would chew them despite having plenty of toys to chew. He chewed loads, had to change his bedding and waterbottles regularly, often more than once a day. He has problems with his teeth now which he goes to the vets for but after the quarntine period and he was moved to diffeent housing, he could no longer get to the plastic to chew.

Re: New water bottle... not convinced!

I had the litre glass one with the duck in for my Gambian and she had no problems with that.

I use the plastic ones I have 4 attached to my rat cage as a back up but also cuz I have a load of little monsters! Lol

But the piggies have 2 bottles as well.

Just thought, you know when u put the wire around the bottle it isn't too tight is it? Making it squeeze the bottle?
What type of bottle are you using? All mine are either classic crystal or lazy bones guinea bottles.
