Re: Surely this is wrong!?

Thought thats what had caused most of the problems in the first place to be honest?? because breeders inbred and line bred because it was the quickest and most certain way to set type thats why it was originally.

In one respect it would soon find out any problems you had in your lines its true, but what then? You have condensed the genes good and bad even further.Got a few litters of more affected/ carriers possibly so surely limits further what you do with your lines from there on and in the future or could do.

Surely especially as more and more breeds are having DNA tests available (in the case of dogs) to identify if the dog is a carrier, affected or clear and other tests are becoming better too surely thats a better way to go. If you outcross as well, then that should give more genetic diversity and avoid the chances of inheriting a rouge gene from each parent.

I would say IMO for what its worth. health testing and especially DNA testing, and careful
research of pedigrees and going further back too then some do now, if the best if not only way to be sure what you produce in the future is better and with less problems. Rather then continue inbreeding and linebreeding and exacerbating even more (or a chance of it ) what you have already.

Re: Surely this is wrong!?

This is a very controversial topic, when done properly line breeding and out crossing can work very well, but unfortunately the majority of people just inbreed which is where the problems start

Re: Surely this is wrong!?

I'm sure people who know what they're doing can do it right but Id be too scared too. I'd worry about the babies that resulted from it because it seems like it would be an experiment so to speak.

Re: Surely this is wrong!?

I inbreed and linebreed my lines and some have had no new 'blood' brought in for literally years with no ill effects.

Inbreeding/linebreeding when done correctly is a very good tool indeed.

Re: Surely this is wrong!?

I'm guessing its not as simple as just "that brother and that sister has amazing health, personalities etc. lets let them babies?"

Gosh no, there are far more factors involved than that.
