Unhappy Another one of my mice has a tumour

Absolutely gutted right now, only had Mila pts a couple of weeks ago

2 nights ago I noticed Baylyn was dragging her back leg, I just thought it was because she got it caught in the bedding as she was running so I left her.
Then this morning when I fed them Bay came running to the food bowl as usual and I noticed her back leg was dragging behind her and assumed it was broken/dislocated.
So I rushed her off to the vets and they said that it's a bone tumour
But I went to a different vet to the one who treated Mila and the vet this time has given me 2 options....
1-Leave Baylyn as she is and when the tumour gets too much have her pts.
2-Take her for x-rays and have the lump and leg removed.

Now the vet I took her to this time is one where they have vet students that help out and the vet said that they would do the x-rays and op for a much lower price as the students would be getting experience because they dont see many mice in.
So it would be helping Baylyn and helping the vet students know how to operate on mice for the future.

But I dont know if I want to risk the operation or not. I think the tumour will affect Bay really quickly so maybe I should, I dont know.

Has anyone had a mouse go through a tumour removal and come round from the anaesthetic ok?

Re: Another one of my mice has a tumour

Aw hun, I'm so sorry. I wish I could offer some advice. My hamster had a leg tumour but was too high to remove safely. Whatever you decide, it will be the right choice for Baylyn ((hugs))

Re: Another one of my mice has a tumour

aww just after you already went through the heartbreak of another mouse im really sorry i hope Baylyn will be ok xx

at least if she didnt make it through the operation she would die in her sleep and free of pain instead of possible suffering until her tumour gets too big hun

Re: Another one of my mice has a tumour

I've had small animals go under surgery and survive. I would go through with the op because I'd feel that it would give the mouse the best chance, if your only other choice is to put her to sleep, I would always try other options first, the other reason is, even if you do lose bay to surgery, you'd have tried. What ever you choose to do for her I know you will make the choice for her benefit, I know small animals (dwarf hamsters, mice etc) who have had surgery and have come out of it ok, infact my hamster is an example, he went on to live another year after having a tumour cut out. Good luck.

Re: Another one of my mice has a tumour

I agree with Acid. Bone tumours tend to be aggressive, and she would be in a lot of pain in not a lot of time. If she was my mouse I would opt for the surgery as if she where to die on the abled then she wouldn't feel anything, and if she survived then she could carry on happily.

Re: Another one of my mice has a tumour

Thank you so much everyone.
I am going to go ahead and let Baylyn have the operation and just hope for the best.
I called the vets and they first want to talk to some guy vet about bones (I cant remember the name they used for that type of vet) and then they will call me in the next couple of days to arrange x-rays and then the op.

I know having quite a few small animals means more chance of losing them more often but this is awful 2 animals (mouse and hamster) passed away and now Baylyn is ill, I'm hoping 2012 will be a better year!

Re: Another one of my mice has a tumour

Oh dear that's awful!! That's what happened with me...one week I saw a tumour on one mouse...3 weeks later her sister got one!! I know nothing about bone tumours but from what people have said it sounds like you're doing the right thing!!! Hope Barylyn pulls through and stops worrying her mummy!!!
