Did I do the right thing?

I e-mailed a pet shop about a cage they suggested was ok for degus!

Savic Chichi 2 Chinchilla, Rat, Degu, Ferret Cage | Net Pet Shop

It has a plastic base!

I got "advised" this kind of cage and my goos where nearly out before there first full clean! I sped to the pet shop only to find out it wouldn't fit in my boot and had to get a nice man to help me put my seats down, I also had to loan money to my dad cus it was before pay day (when I first got them nearly 4 years ago BTW)

This is the e-mail I sent:

This is about that cage, it shouldn't be recommended for degus as they will eat the plastic base. I bought a cage like this for my degus and they started eating the base, I then had to buy them a new cage and the old cage was unusable. Adult degus will chew through the base in less than a week. If you could take "degu" out so that no one else makes this mistake that would be great thanks.

I'm wondering if they will actually pay attention to this though FYI mine where BABY degus and even they managed to NEARLY make a hole!

Re: Did I do the right thing?

That cage is only suitable for rats. Unfortunatly pet shops want to make money. I bet they full well know that degus would chew out of it but know that someome would have to buy a new cage. You did the right thing though, i just hope they listen x

You did the right thing, but my cynical side sez that you will get a stupid blank response back and nothing will be done

Re: Did I do the right thing?

you should have mentioned chins too, they are bigger chewers then goos

and not only is there the risk of escape, theres the risk of death! if they were to ingest any of the plastic it can cause painful blockages, bloat, and death
plastic should never be used in any way shape or form with chins and goos

Re: Did I do the right thing?

I once sent an email to Wilkinsons about a cage that said it was "suitable for gerbils. It wasn't, far too small, plastic, sides not high enough to allow gerbils natural digging instinct etc. but they emailed me back and said the RSPCA said the cage was within their guidelines for gerbils. i don't know if that is tue but if it is, the RSPCA have very lax standards.

Re: Did I do the right thing?

I have sent quite lengthy emails to ZooPlus and PetPlanet to name a few who dont sell a single "rabbit" hutch suitable for any rabbit.

I got a great response from PetPlanet detailing that they were on the hunt for better hutches and cages but their supply was limited.

ZooPlus on the other hand were rude and the person clearly was illiterate as well as not having a clue about pet needs, just a sales numpty.

It starts with 1 email or 1 conversation in the shop but after they've had a few along similar lines from various people they will research for themselves and realise they are doing wrong
