How old, for babies to intro to adults?

I am possibly looking at getting some baby rats soon.

But I want to know how many weeks old they should be to intro them to adults?

I don't really have anywhere for a spare cage if I can help it (obv if I have intro problems I will set up a spare but OH doesn't really want 2 cages).

So I would need to try and make sure I collect them when they are at a good size to do intros when I get them home.

Re: How old, for babies to intro to adults?

Mine are being introd to my older boys who range from 8 months to 3 months but they are all big boys. My 4 babies are only 6 weeks old and its going fine. They actually met when they were only 4 weeks old on the bed under careful watch I had them as they were doomed to be fed to snakes and they were already taken away from mum. So I've fed them up and gave lactol.

If your getting from a breeder then they usually home out at 8 weeks old.

I really think u ought to get a smaller cage to intro them in.
What if one of your adults goes for the babies?
All mine are in a freddy cage.
I have stripped and cleaned the explorer cage and I'm hoping to put them all in it tomoz or Saturday.

Even if the cage u get is a hamster cage second hand off eBay. Infact the freddy cage I got off eBay for £10 with shelf.

Goodluck

Re: How old, for babies to intro to adults?

I have a critter 2 that they are in just now, I have another base, lid and sides to make up either a 2 or a 1 so when I intro them I just set up as a critter 1 with not much in it. And I have a leon cage.

I doubt they would go for the babies there were no fights at all when I intro'd my original 2 to my new 3 (bully rat jazzy has now been removed and is living with my friends neutered boy as she just kept bullying). But like I said, if the intros didn't go well I can seperate them.

If it went well then I would strip and set up the critter 2 with the 1 attached to it, so essentially a 3. What I really want is a duetto or similar so I may just wait until I get a new cage.

Re: How old, for babies to intro to adults?

I've intro'd 6 week old babies to a lone adult female.

What gender are your rats? If they're males I'd say younger is better as they don't smell like bucks so they're more likely to be accepted quickly. In my experience, does are unimpressed with babies so I would wait untill they're 8+ weeks before attempting intros.

Re: How old, for babies to intro to adults?

I'd go for slightly older then. My intro with the 6 week olds was scary, but when I added a 15 week old they all settled down and snuggled within 10 minutes.

The norm is actually 6 weeks for most breeders, but some of us do home out at 8ish weeks.
